um, yeah. a good looking, compact truck with a diesel? sign me up. Concidentally, how do you feel about this good looking (to some) compact pickup truck that will likely be available with a diesel that WILL be sold in America?

Kinja'd!!!

Word is the Colorado/Canyon will get the VM2.8L 4 cylinder diesel engine.

the VM is a solid motor, and I do like that truck. I would love to see some of these come over. Of course Opel will just send the blueprints over here and someone in Canada will make it, but still interesting

I'd have one by Arctic Trucks:

If I can't have a Toyota HiLux, that is.

yeah, as i understand it, its being redesigned cosmetically to meet American tastes and regulations and will be built either in Mexico, Canada or both to avoid chicken tax.

sounds about right. My American tastes like the hell out of that, so I hope it doesnt lose much in the shape.

should have based it off the Touareg system...

I hope the window treatment looks a lot more like the amorak, I don't see the need to rake up the beltline, and the way the beltline curves up and the bedline drops down makes it look like its breaking in half. I don't think it should look like a silverado, but I want to be able to see out of it at least.

I agree, the blocky style on the Amorak is alot cleaner. That beltline sweep especially doesnt work with the heavily flared bed sides too. Looks like the bars are holding the whole damn thing together

Is this VW laughing at us in America, giving "ze Germans" a Ford Ranger basically? Dammit...I want the Ranger to come back here!

IMO, side by side the Ranger looks so much better than the others.

The Amarok's Manual tranny is one of the best gearboxes I've ever driven. Although I've never driven with the Ranger as a Manual. The L200 has proven to be quicker when on the road and the Hilux keeps being hard as a rock but beige and bland. But that's my opinion, of course. Never driven the S10.

AFAIK you can option it either way - there are two drive systems on offer for the Amarok, one based on the Touareg, and one simpler, cheaper option.

It will be produced in Wentzville, Missouri - not Canada or Mexico. Another interesting point on the chicken tax is that it is currently not stopping GM or Ford from importing their Australian Utes as we currently have a free trade agreement with Australia- that means no chicken tax.

Kinja'd!!!

Lastly I leave you with the most recent rendering I have seen online- I hope it looks better than this in real life. I don't think we will have to wait long, rumor is they will debut at the Chicago Auto show this year.

Didn't connect the dots that GMs baby Duramaxes are VM Motori engines. It will be interesting to see if GM follows Dodges lead and puts the 3.0L Motori engine in the silvarado/sierra. My guess is no, as it would compete too much with the colorado/canyon which people will already be cross shopping against their bigger brothers.

Of course the still born 4.5 looms quietly in the background.

we have a free trade agreement with Australia? I need a 79 series 4 door right now (granted I know they aren't built in Australia...but i can dream)

Kinja'd!!!

Also, I hope and pray they fix those windows, bedline. It ruins it.

the dmax 4500 is such a great tragedy. And yeah some engines are VM and some are still izuzu, but all are duramax branded. The 2.8 would be a great engine and I can't wait to see it. There is no way GM will use the vm3.0, based on whats happening at dodge and because GM is just to conservative to do something as amazing as that. I would love to see a 3.4 v6 dmax though based on the stillborn 4.5l dmax. If my math is right it would be good for ~240hp and 375 ft-lbs but be a little more efficient than the more stressed, more powerfull VM3.0 ~240/410.

Less exotic and I think probably less capable, The Chevy Tornado. Unavailable due to some sort of fowl tax. Why the Colorado will have four doors.

Available south of Texas . At nearly half the price of the next lowest Chevy Truck, I'd say they're not exactly lobbying an end to the chicken.

Otherwise they'd have to compete rather than saying "we only have medium and large."

yeah probably less capable but small trucks just fill a certain void. Need to pick up a few bags of compost? Not in my wagon....

Polo pickup, perfect

The only thing the Amorak has going for it is a nicer interior then almost all other utes. They're expensive to buy and expensive to service. One of my mates has gone through two transmissions so far attempting to drive it on sand (at a work site), VW have told him any more issues with the transmission and they won't honour the warranty.

We sure do , only applies to made in Australia cars. Agree with you on the windows, although I doubt those will change at all. Probably will just change the fascia.

I've said this before, but the chicken tax is not preventing Ford or GM from importing their Utes from Australia. We have a free trade agreement with the country and thus the chicken tax doesn't exist. The extremely competitive nature of the US auto industry would certainly have forced one of them to import these trucks if there was enough demand for a car based pickup. I sure wish they would bring one over though.

Kinja'd!!! webmonkees > FJ80WaitinForaLSV8

Agreed, I meant that the chicken tax pretty much ensures that the general market segment is difficult to establish any foothold in the lower segment. Nobody wants to compete.

Then again..Imagine if China or Korea (either one) could bring in their SUVs as work trucks, exempt from crash protection standards for cars?

Perhaps it's saving lives not having those very basic basic box-and engine contraptions on our shores achieving highway speeds.

It's not, compact trucks that we don't want...
