Watch out for shrapnel.

WTF? Ebay turbos do that, but not name brand turbos. Why doesn't the guy say where he got it?
If it wasn't an ebay turbo (just because it says Garret means nothing), my next guess would be it was oil starved and the bearing failed... because it shouldn't fly apart like that.

The owner claims it was a Garrett GT4088, however, it isn't anymore. It is a bit suspicious that he doesn't say where he got it, though.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand this is why you don't fuck around and try to save some money on a shitty turbo. Skimping is a horrible idea that, under the right conditions, can get you and/or your friends seriously injured at best and killed at worst. Good name brand turbos run about $1k or more for a reason.

I'd guess it was a compressor wheel failure. I don't think housings would just pop like that unless hit with shrapnel from a disintegrating compressor. Poor install or Chinese knock-off are my guesses.

The owner claims it was a Garrett GT4088, but who knows if it was a legitimate Garrett.

if it was a pre-owned turbo with a small chip in the compressor wheel the balance will be off and at 100k -150k rpm... that might do it.

And it looks like some welds cracked below the turbo.
Crappy welds turbo asploding=CRACKPIPE.

Yeah, Garrets are tested against such things. They are designed to contain a failure as part of "pop" testing. If this was a Garret and it failed like this, it would be a HUGE deal, as it was either a one in a million thing or Garret got some bad castings. My guess is this is a Chinese knockoff of a Garret and that's why it hasn't been a big topic on the turbo forums.
