Today, let's look at 5 ridiculous and rare classic AMGs.
W201 190E 3.2 AMG
The 190E comes from Mercedes' era of fastidious engineering without compromises, and was clearly aimed to compete with a certain Bavarian manufacturer. Of course, we all know about the Cosworth versions. But this is the real cool one. With a huge 3.2 liter straight six, this is a proper AMG car, handbuilt, and looks extra mean. It features a manual transmission, and a 0-60 time of 7 seconds. Downsides? Well, with a straight six, a manual, and those proportions, it feels almost too squarely aimed at BMW. But who are we kidding, those looks are pure AMG brutishness.
W124 E36 AMG
Of course, we all know about the 500e. Except that one isn't technically an AMG. The e36 AMG is the underdog of the W124 range, perhaps one of the greatest Mercedes ever made. And it's arguably more interesting than the 500e. Indeed, it has a 3.6 liter straight six, 272hp, is available in coupe, convertible, sedan, and just to please Jalopnik readers, an estate version. The best part? All are available with a manual transmission.
W140 S600 AMG 7.1
This particular AMG should perhaps be considered the single most German car ever made. First, just look at it. Second, it's so big that when it came out, they were surprised to see it couldn't be distributed around Europe by train, because it wouldn't fit on them. Third, it has a 7.1 liter V12 good for 496 horsepower. The 7.1 liter version is extremely rare, with only one on sale in Europe right now.
W202 C55 AMG
Of course, you probably have heard of the C36 AMG. Or even C43 AMG. But you probably haven't heard of the C55 AMG. With only a few hundred built, to get one, you had to purchase a C43 AMG, give it back to Mercedes along with a few tens of thousands of dollars extra, after which they would cram the 350hp V8 that you could also get in an E55 AMG and give it back to you. Imagine that, a car the size of a 3 series, with an engine competing with that of an e39 M5. Weight distribution? Those are questions you don't ask. Still, this is easily one of the most ridiculous and awesome AMGs ever to see the light of day.
R129 SL 73 AMG
The R129 SL was a superbly engineered, fast, and safe convertible usually purchased with tame 6 cylinder engines. But over its lifetime, it received a plethora of 6, 8 and 12 cylinder engines. And this is the one you want. The extremely rare SL 73 AMG had 525 horsepower, took 5 seconds to get to 60, and its engine eventually became the Pagani Zonda powerhouse.

I've heard all of them except the C55.
And oh, it's funny when you see S600 AMG Only makes 96 more hp than you got from my Pedestrian S600.
That's why i had a dream of installing the Brabus's 7.3L V12 to my W140.
586hp, 0-60 in 4.1seconds, what's not to love?

Ya.
As soon as someone is kind enough to give me 100k for conversion at brabus..

I've had that problem too

I'm not usually a Merc guy, but that 190E really speaks to me...

Yeah, best of the bunch, I'd say.

Heard of all of them. My favourite is the W140 7.1. Seven point one liters. Amazing.
And the W202 C55 is so rare that nobody really know how many were built. I have heard numbers from 20 to 500.

what about the mercedes c amg diesel?
![]() 09/08/2013 at 11:29 |
|
As someone who drives an SL600 AMG quite frequently, I've lusted after the SL73. Go to youtube, Jeremy Clarkson drove one and has a video about it. If ever a car were to *need* a 7.3L V12, this was the best choice to start them all. I just wish the car looked more like the other R129s. Those taillights are on a later model, closer to 2001.
The sad part is, I'll likely never see one in person, much less get a chance to drive or even own one.

The genuine 190e amg - the one with the 3.2 engine and not just the bodykit, which 190e owners could have retrofitted to their ordinary cars - seems to be extremely rare. It would be cool to see how much one of these would go for. I did find this clip of one which is pretty neat (sadly it's just photos, not actual video footage).

Aah fantastic car. Your SL600 is great too, they really don't make them in the same way anymore.
![]() 09/08/2013 at 11:36 |

Not the 'purest' AMG in my book, mostly because diesel, but certainly an underdog. I could probably make a list of 20 or so rare AMG cars, they seem to make a lot of one or two year low volume beasts.

Mega article. Thanks. Seen S600 and C55 at Mercedes World at Brooklands

My neighbour had a Left hand Drive SL73 a while ago. I never knew or understood how important/rare it was. I assume he worked for MB as he had a CLS before he moved , oddly enough it was a diesel.

That W124 E36 AMG... it speaks to me.
Especially in coupe form -
And available with a stick? I may have just found a new holy grail.
And shit, have these things aged well. I'd choose this over any Mercedes produced today.

aaah great pics. Yeah I'm tempted to get one myself

Sorry, but you're missing the best one of all:
(reposted reply from the 560 SEC AMG post)
What is it? It's possibly the only widebody W126 AMG sedan ever made: A 1983 540SE with a manual transmission. The specs, as best as I recall:
- 5.4L Bored, stroked, ported, polished, balanced and blueprinted AMG motor (with AMG cams, mechanical lifters instead of the usual hydraulics, etc) based on a euro 5.0L
- Getrag 5 speed manual transmission with double disc racing clutch and Torsen rear end.
- adjustable suspension (shock adjustment via dash switch)
- the only known widebody W126 sedan ever made , it had a full SEC front clip, SEC rear trim, full leather (dash, headliner, etc), monster Sony stereo, etc.
This was an AMG euro show car that was brought to their US HQ in Chicago after its euro tour. It was bought by my dad's business partner in 1984, and later bought by my dad, who later sold it to a friend of mine's father, who still owns it (in western Michigan).
Getrag 5 speed manual, and some pretty nice Recaro seats:
Small details - The rear chrome strip was also from an SEC, I'm not sure if any of the other rear panels were.
The little buttons on the spokes are the horn. The OE-looking switch closest to the wheel was the suspension adjustment. The dash and all the other trim was covered in leather (which eventually had to be taken apart and re-glued because it started to shrink and pull away from the concave surfaces).
Inside and out, it was a very special car. I'm reminded of it now whenever I see the newer cars which have gone back to this 'SEC' style grille, and I love that the new cars still have that same familiar AMG snarl (well, the V8 models, anyway). I love the way these sound, and this car, with it's manual transmission and full AMG/SEC body kit, is as special as any AMG ever made. And no one knows it exists...

Actually, the earlier SL models (mid to late 90's) were the more problematic ones. They came with a "biodegradable" wiring harness that was supposed to be somewhat more environmentally friendly (in a car with a V12, sure) and what happens is the harness will just eventually go bad. The replacement harness doesn't have this issue.
Currently the 600 I drive has a heating issue, where Merc needs to get off their lazy asses and pull the front end apart and check the hoses and thermostat, and the flow rate through the radiator. The water pump was just replaced in June, and the car has run warmer than average since then, but I'm under the impression that it's something basic, but given how the car is built, nothing is basic. There's a note at the local benz repair center for the car, I think it has about 4300 miles left, where they'll take a look at it again no charge. It's gone back twice already, and they just don't want to tear it apart because it's "within spec."
I'm looking to purchase the car from my boss next year and give it a good home. It sure needs it.
![]() 09/08/2013 at 13:06 |

I actually built the W124 AMG out of LEGO bricks when I was twelve...
Hmm, not my best work...
![]() 09/08/2013 at 13:07 |
|
That's true about the SL models, the S600 my dad had had a leaky head gasket, needed a new 90,000 v ignition coil, the front air suspension stopped working completely, and the front left A-arm had a stress fracture. Dealer wanted $23,000 to fix it, car had 56k miles. Hopefully you can give it a good home soon.

Ok you got me. You win.
In fairness, there was no way you could have known... which is what makes this one such a ringer.
I still remember how stoked I was the first time I saw that car. It was no Testarossa - despite costing about the same new - but it was still like having a 'wall poster car' right in front of me. For a kid in a small Michigan town, it was very cool stuff.

I was curious of current market prices and whether it's feasible to find one already imported
(I don't think Mercedes back then ever bothered to bring it over here)
Or figure out how much it would cost to bring one stateside and in LHD with
a manual of course
.

Im surprised you didn't mention that the 190E 3.2's came about when AMG ended up with a bunch of extra 3.2L sixes leftover after the Hammer conversions. So they stuck them in 190E's and created a lower end AMG car.
My favorite will always be the AMG Hammer 5.6L coupe. Followed by the SL73.
![]() 09/08/2013 at 13:58 |

Oi, you're forgetting the SL60 AMG R129, SL70 AMG R129, 450 SLC AMG C107, E50 AMG W210, 300CE 3.4 AMG W124, and SL500 AMG R129. These are other wicked old school AMG Mercedes-Benzes too.

good luck, brabus wont do it anymore. You would either have to find one now or do a custom job.
![]() 09/08/2013 at 14:54 |

Air suspension? Learn something new every day...The SL600 is hydraulic on all 4 corners, and something I hope I never have to work on.
I want to just do get the car back to factory condition. I'm not replacing the seats or anything, but it involves fixing the dash lights, replacing some plastic engine covers and getting some parts re-finished so the aluminum looks better. It's never really gotten lots of TLC, but it's a real heartbreaker of a car. Whenever my boss mentions selling it, I cringe. I know it's not perfect, but it gets driven, and that says a lot more about it than other cars. As long as I can afford it, I'll keep it on the road. When I can't, I'll find a place to store it until I can get it back on the road. I was never originally into foreign cars until this one, and I don't want to let it get away.

I keep seeing a 190E AMG 3.2 down the street from me every so often. I had a feeling it was an old AMG but I wasn't 100% sure. I have to get a pic of it now, its in really good shape
This is exactly what it looks like, looks killer

I'm almost certain they didn't. I'd guess at least $30K (based on
the sole somewhat recent ad I found
), not including shipping & federalization, if applicable. And that's
if
you can find one with a manual.
It's bound to be an expensive proposition either way, but if lets say I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd track one down and do it, cost be damned.

Im pretty sure the 73 took less than 5 seconds... the slr74 renntech r129 took 3.7 seconds.. im positive the AMG one was around that one considering they had the same mods
and you forgot there was a amazing one that was made just before Mercedes took over AMG the 500sl 6.0 AMG it had unique panels and spoiler that was the last of the "classic" AMGs before they changed their design direction... I own a r129 myself I've been looking for one but these are extremely hard to find.

Every. Single. One. of those Benzes is hotter than the best current Benz (AMG or no) today. Except the G-Class.
Good grief, those things are all so stately, chiseled, elegant, and substantial. Modern Benzes don't do these things justice.

"AMG was not part of Mercedes-Benz when the 190e was first produced, but a separate racing and tuning company."
Buuut... They did release an "AMG Power Package" that was only available for the Euro spec 2.5l 16v and the Evo 1 that was only available in Euro markets. So its just an upgraded limited edition cosworth. And 2.5l ...
Pictures are of the two 190e 2.5l 16v that were tuned by Cosworth, then AMG. Top is Evo 1 bottom is the 2.5l that was only released in the European markets.

What, no widebody?
![]() 09/08/2013 at 21:56 |

Yessssss. Gotta love the W126. I am fairly certain this was not the only widebody W126 AMG sedan, though maybe one of the only cars with such extensive engine, body, and suspension mods. Definitely no less special though because that's a pretty freaking spectacular car there.
![]() 09/08/2013 at 22:12 |
|
I seem to recall something about there being a long wheelbase SEL wide body, but this beig the only short wheelbase model. I could be wrong though. It would be a shame if there weren't more, but they are as rare as hen's teeth, if there is more than one...
![]() 09/08/2013 at 22:19 |
|
Nice bolsters on those Recaros. Beefy.
![]() 09/08/2013 at 22:28 |
|
I don't know where the spec sheets went for this car, but as I recall it had about the same peak power as the ensuing 6.0L Hammer, due to hotter cams, higher compression (this was originally a euro car, and ran best with octane boost added), and generally more extensive engine work. This car was heavier than the Hammer, but had a higher ratio rear end (original owner had a score to settle with his brother's modified Corvette). It also had much wider tires and a bit of a trick suspension (for the day). So you might say 'don't bring a Hammer to a Sledgehammer fight'... If this car had been given a name, that would have been fitting.
![]() 09/08/2013 at 22:48 |
|
I believe the Hammer designation was only given to the 6.0L conversions, which were based on the 5.6L factory engine.

Nope, heard of three of them. (C36, C55, SL73 AMG). In fact there used to be C36's and one C55 around these parts.
The S600 7.1 doesn't really surprise me. AMG is not against doing such one-off megabuck cars.
The only one that's really surprising is the 190E 3.2

I would like to mention a few more rare official Mercedes-AMG versions (as offered by Mercedes-Benz and AMG in the sales catalogue from 1993 onward rather than individual customer request):
W210 E55 4Matic AMG (only 19 produced with all-wheel-drive system from ML-Class)
W220 S63 and W215 CL63 with naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V12 motor putting out 444 horsepowers (26 units were produced for one month in 2001 in selected European and Asian markets). Twelve units of G63 with same V12 motor were built in 2002. This 6.3-litre motor was a bored out version of 5.8-litre V12.
W251 R63 4Matic AMG was produced for one year in a very limited quantity. The R-Class was ill-suited for the high performance motor and didn't sell well.

This is an AMG 500E 6.2 and if it was just parked on the street.. your neighbor is the MAN.
These were known as a the HAMMER and go for 50k for a poorly documented, maybe fake example all the way up to 200k for the real deal.
Here is a pretty cool JAPANESE VID of one racing an NSX and RUF Porsche. In a drag, then an ALL OUR TRACK RACE IN THE WET. (photo of a beautiful coupe version below).

The C43/C55 "weight distribution" issue is moot. The 4.3l engine is exactly the same as the 5.4l M113 in the E55, except the displacement is different. In fact, it's probably slightly better with the missing alusil they bored out to create the 5.4l. Many C43 owners end up sourcing an engine from a crashed E55 and dumping it into their C43 for $1,500 or so.

![]() 09/09/2013 at 12:05 |

Do you recall what color and model it was (560SEL, 500SE ?). Was it an AMG or another tuner? It would be interesting to know (for the current owner, particularly) if there are others. It wouldn't surprise me if it was around Chicago - that was AMG USA headquarters back in the 80's... As likely to find interesting old AMGs there as south Florida.

He had no badges on the car but claimed it to be an SEC AMG. I couldn't find anything on the Internet to justify the claim, but it was worth talking to the guy just to hear the story about what is probably the only car like it I will ever see. It has seen better days as there was some rust under the hood, but he is working through the restoration.

That looks to be the stock US-market two door 560 SEC with a set of AMG wheels.
Note that it doesn't have the AMG bumpers, skirts, 0r the widebody kit. Also, it's not a four door, which is what makes the above car seriously rare (there may be dozens of widebody coupes, I'm not sure the number AMG made). It's a nice car, but the wheels are the only relatively rare part of it from what I can see...

Keep in mind I am relying on my terrible memory, but I want to say it has the AMG engine that was shipped over from Europe in pieces or maybe the AMG upgrades were performed same as if they were on a production model, but in the aftermarket. I apologize for my lack of information but the story was definitely interesting.

It seems we are both half right. It appears there was only one other known sedan widebody but it was last seen in a junk yard in Germany a couple of years ago. The widebody panels were removed from the car and apparently listed for sale on eBay a while back. From the pics it does not appear to be a long wheelbase, but hard to tell.

Old school kinda excludes it, but a good find. Possibly the only thing that made that generation acceptable was the amgs

Hope you don't mind but I shared the info on your dad's old car with the serious pre-merger AMG lovers over at mercedes-amg-classic.com. There was some discussion about your dad's exact car in one of the threads over there but no one knew much about it except that there had been a blue metallic 5-speed 500 SE widebody. That really is a pretty exceptionally special car your friend's dad has there!
