Did a few things to the coupe today, replaced the fuel lines, pcv valve, some assorted trim, and started to disassemble things for the intake gasket replacement. Then I started fooling around with the grille.

I'm going to paint the mesh black regardless of which path you decide I take.

I voted for classic, but the naked was the second choice. I dont know why, but just the horse looks kinda weird.

I really like it naked, but the classic is also great.

Exactly the same for me. I think the horse by itself just looks odd.

im compelled to ask you where you are from in mass, as im in mass too. plus my father in law has a 67 coupe that ive spent hundreds of hours working on as well, so i saw a classic stang with mass plates, piqued my interest :)

You're only allowed to do the naked Bullitt-esque grille if you have a fastback. So classic it is.

I think the horse by itself looks the most brutal.

I was also thinking about doing just the horse and getting rid of the little ring (corral they call it) around it.

Yeah I'm split between classic and the naked. Fog lights will fill out the grille more, so when I have the money for them, I think that'l help pull the naked look off.

It seems like it's a split between the two. I really want fog lights though, I feel like they help pull off the naked look.

Let me start by saying that, as a Mustang Guy, my opinion is more important and weighty then those of non-Stang people. Just sayin' /troll

Anyway...

As much as I love the classic Pony In The Pen (or Corral, if you like) grilles. I mean, they say everything you want to say, right? The problem is my generation and forward (currently own an S197) - as every PP car has the same grille, I think it cheapens the look overall. And I mean for every pony.

That's why I run a naked, black grille with a hard to notice black pony (no corral) and think it looks about perfect on all the pre-Fox Stangs and post S197's too. Strip that horsie down to it's naked parts, ride bareback across the plains and into the sunset. Fuck yeah.

You're correct.

If you're talking about resto-jobs and numbers matching stockers.

If, however, you're talking about literally any other Pony, it's really no big deal given the "borrowed" elements of design shared across the range, from chassis to chassis too.

If it's a Mod Job, none of the conventions apply.

Oooohhh, do a shop with the fogs and the naked and the fogs and the horse. That might help make the just horse look a lot better!

I was being facetious, really, but I do tend to think the classic look looks better on the notchbacks.

I was just bustin' balls.

I'm completely with you in that, personally, I prefer the classic look generally speaking. Notchbacks, not so much. Dime a dozen ponies, IMHO. For that reason, can't care less when people do whatever they want with 'em up to and including sticking an LS under that FoMoCo product.

Where the rarefied ponies are considered, however; that's holy ground. Example: you can take a 71/72 and dress it up as a Mach 1 and I won't be butthurt but if you take a 71/72 Mach 1 and turn it into anything but a numbers matching car, if you restomod or restorod it, I think you need your balls put in a vice.

Hah, it's okay, I was looking for a fastback, but they're many thousands of dollars more for similar condition bodies/engines, so I went with this little beauty.

And bonus points go to me because the coupes are a couple hundred pounds lighter. Power to weight ratio baby!

Kinja'd!!!0

Amen, Fuck yeah!

I haven't looked at the poll results yet, but I like the way you're thinking. I'm spraying the grille black any ways, and I like the idea of black accents. Eventually I'm aiming for an early trans-am look, set up for some turns, 5 speed manual, minilight or mesh 16 inch wheels with black centers etc. I saw this picture in a random forum search and I really like the look, thinking about adding the outer corral if the results come in naked.

Kinja'd!!!

I'd really love some fog lights too.

Personal opinion? They'd be great wheels on the wrong car. But look, that's just my dirty poop-shoot (aka; opinion) and you should do whatever the hell makes you happy.

I'm just way in love with the vintage Shelby Racing Wheels, and they're the reason I'm looking at getting reproduction versions for my '06 which sits on the OEM wheels which are Ford's "homage" to the Shelby Racing Wheels or just spacing the stockers to accommodate wider rubber. But, that said, my S197 is black, tinted, louvered and has most of its accents blacked out and I'm a huge fan of the higher sidewall look, too. Everyone goes for big or huge wheels with low-pro rubber but when it comes to Muscle, I completely prefer that taller tire, smaller wheel look. And again, that's just my opinion.

I'll dig up a picture of my car (as recent as possible). I'd snap one right now and upload it but my poor pony, which is my DD (and will soon have to BABY as my wife and I are just 8 weeks away from baby day) is sadly quite dirty. You know how black is. I was it once a week, on average, during the summer and into the fall but even that isn't enough sometimes... especially as our trees are shedding some of their foliage and the rains have started up again. (Welcome to the Wet Coast of Beautiful British Columbia)

I did the naked treatment on mine, although I went with a silver grille made from expanded steel. It's recognizable as a Mustang even without the pony, and I like to declutter as much as possible, so as not to detract from the naturally beautiful lines.

Bridgewater, that's like 45, 50 minutes away. I bought some wheels off craigslist down there for 25 bucks (score). Nice Coupe, I eventually want to paint mine some shade of dark green or dark blue.

Congrats on the baby, I'm sure the S197 will baby with as much grace as a solid axle can! The rain and tree shedding foliage is a fair trade for your landscape though, I'm on the east coast near Boston and all I get to look at is buildings. I need more nature in my life.

I do love those Shelby style wheels though. During previous bouts of fantasy shopping, the Shelby Style was all I was into and all I wanted. I still really like them, and would totally rock them given the opportunity, but my new fascination is various styles of mesh wheels. I think the biggest I'd go with on any classic car older than like 30 years is 17 inches. A lot of the guys on the forums are either into 15 inch Torque Thrust D's or 18 or 19 inch HRE's. I want to be different. I want to be that one guy rocking 16 inch black meshies with a nice fat tire huggin' that machined lip.

Definitely post a picture some time, I've got a soft spot for S197's and yours sounds pretty mean.

Kinja'd!!!0

Mean? Not yet, that'll take time and money - which I had until about seven months ago. That kind of news changes your priorities.

Outside of the obvious cosmetic touches visible in the picture it also has a blacked out faux-gas cap and under the hood a BBK CAI. I've got a Flowmaster 44 axleback on, right now. My buddy, he's got almost all the rest of the kit at his place but I've run out of spendy funds for now, so the swap to true dual exhaust is on hold for... a year? I don't know, really. I'd planned to build the motor; TB, plugs and cables, tune, etc and run a tuned exhaust (with cats) to the, hopeful, tune of 300 horses at the rear. Now, I know that number is pretty far fetched without FI, but that wasn't "off" the list until recently as the expense of going to a twin turbo set up (if you've never seen 'em on 4.0L Colognes in S197's, you should go look) is pretty high.

All said and done, I may not even get around to doing the rest. Why? Kid.

Look, I'm not that guy who gets married, pregnant and gets a minivan. Not at all. That said, I wouldn't mind four doors. Ideally, a wagon. We're really looking at the ATS 2.0T as our next car, but I'm not sure I really want to pay depreciation. Take my pony, for example; with less then 60,000 km on the clock and a clean history I picked it up for the steal of $11,500 leaving the depreciation to be paid for by the previous and only owner. When I was shopping, I was looking at a BRZ (not the FRS... all because badge snobbery) and the reason I ended up with the Mustang (outside of my first car being an '88 GT) was it cost just over 1/3rd the price of the BRZ. The wife is on board for a CTS Sportwagon, and the V if we can find one in our budget, and I think that's pretty cool.

But, as a 6'4 dude and married to a woman of 5'8 - the first year or so (depending) while we wait for our kid to get old enough and fat enough to sit in a forward facing seat is going to be very... tight. Thank god we have family and friends with larger cars because, and I hate to admit this, I'm really considering changing out the 2+2 to a true four seat sedan at least.

Kinja'd!!!0

The thing is, I totally understand. Well not totally, I don't have any kids, but I DO understand the need for something with 4 doors, or at least 4 or 5 real seats. I've "fit" a bunch of my friends in the back of my 67, and they were, well, thankful it was a quick trip around the block. So I get you on that one. The ATS looks pretty sharp, but yeah buying a new car is expensive, and depreciation sucks. The thing is you can always buy another you know? If it's best for the family (exception=minivan) then you gotta do what you gotta do. There's always the older beater sedan option, beater in this case means used. Can't be an actual beater cause it's gotta be safe for the youngling, but you know what I mean.

The fact that your wife is down for a CTS V...wagon is too cool. She sounds like a keeper to me. What about a Subaru/Saab/Volvo wagon? If you're not sold on buying new (no pun intended) there's gotta be plenty of those kicking around the west coast.

Well I'm gonna hit the hay, its 1:35 am in Boston and I have to work tomorrow, Gnight.
