Every day when I take the bus to campus I pass an El Camino under a car cover, and it reminds me how much I love car covers. Here me out here.

There are a lot of reasons why we should all love car covers. There is the practical benefit of protecting our most prized possession. I always respect a guy who takes the time to cover his car. I remember one year there was a guy that parked his Acura Integra Type R in the parking lot of my dorm. I always made sure to cover her up if I noticed that a corner had been flipped up by the wind or something. I look out for my fellow enthusiasts.

But it's not just the all weather capabilities of the car cover that make it so awesome, it's the sheer excitement that I feel whenever I see one. It's like Christmas, because you never know what will be underneath that polyester exterior. Of course, you can usually get an idea from the overall shape, but guessing what it is is definitely half the fun.

It's also a great opportunity to test your car knowledge. Is that a C4 or a C5 Corvette under there? 1st or 2nd gen Cadillac CTS? Oh. My. God. Is that a Lamborghini?!?! You get the idea.

It is one of the purest pleasures of my car obsession to walk around a corner and see a car covered up. And it is one of the many things that makes me happy to be the overly enthusiastic, verging on scary, probably bad for my long term health, car guy that I am.

So what is the craziest/most surprising thing you've found under a car cover? I want stories!

I would like to acknowledge that some of the car covers featured above have the company logo right on them...so the whole mystery thing doesn't really apply as much. But that Bentley one is sexy and I took the Lamborghini one myself.

Purpose made car covers, usually for a higher end cars, are like yoga pants.

That's the best way I've ever heard it put. It accentuates one of the best parts, the shape.

Best one I ever saw was a late 90's Viper GTS. That was the car that got me into cars, so it has a special place. But I knew what it was from the exhaust before I even looked at the shape.

I loved it.

To be fair, that Lambo's cover should only be used inside. It is too thin and loose fitting to be of any use to protect the car from the elements, not to mention the wind blowing that cover around probably would do more damage than if it were just uncovered. I'm all for car covers, I need to get one for my Miata, as I'm only driving it for fun now and it isn't a necessity to drive so it stays parked most of the time and it is getting filthy.

But car covers are like clothes and you got to chose the right ones for your environment.

I adore car covers. My dad has had a car cover for his Mustang since the day he bought it. Mainly as its very difficult to get parts for and keeps unwanted attention away.
Our new neighbours seem to be somewhat car enthusiasts ( Alfa Brera and a A4 Avant S Line.) , I drove home one day to see him pulling the cover down and tucking one of the frayed pull ties under the wheel.
He saw it floating around the drive and decided to put it back on . It was a nice gesture.
My favourite feature of putting on a car cover is tucking in the mirrors. So satisfying.

That's a really good point. I noticed that the Lamborghini was actually pretty dirty, and the cover was definitely too thin. Garages are hard to come by in Shanghai, where I too that picture, so I guess the driver thought this was the bed alternative. Sadly, he was probably wrong.

Yeah, it probably was a very costly bad choice. . . The car needs to be clean and dusted off before a cover can go on without doing damage to the paint. The thick padded outdoor car covers do a decent job of not flapping around though.
