Someone in my building has an E60 M5... it sounds awful.

It's reminiscent of a particularly flatulent Tuba. How do you manage to screw up an exhaust that badly?

Then again, the "car culture" here is mostly "How clearly will this communicate how rich I am?" The current hot item seems to be the Audi A7, edging out the perennial favorite Porsche Cayenne.

Sad face.

Cause some German engineer dude probably ran a calculation and that provided the best ratio of performance to efficiency to cost to sound.

Here's some ear bleach for you.

You can get an E60 for the same price as a loaded Camry now. Still an impressive machine, no question...but it's definitely lost some of it's "Hey I'm a totally wealthy rich guy" Cred because of this.

Now the new TT M5? The poors have no way of getting their working class poverty grease all over one unless they're washing it, so straight money. Until the next M5 appears, anyway.

I love the E6x M series but I must admit that they sound awful at low speeds. Like a poorly maintained 80's van.

It revs to like 9K. I find most of the time cars that rev really, really high don't sound that great at low RPM's. Is a formula one car at idle really actually nice sounding? Or a Lambo?

Hell, you can get them for the price of a midlevel Camry. I'm seeing them for 29k!

Of course it will still have the maintenance requirements of a 90k car with an exotic V10..

I am perfectly okay with this.

It's much more likely it was just the most expensive option. Trust me. :|

It didn't sound like a performance exhaust.

I would be, but like I said, the car culture here is awful. Yes, there are a lot of A7's, but they usually have several dents, torn body panels, hello kitty pillows on the headrests, and those awful rubber steering wheel covers with the fake wood.

Pretty much, the cars here are "You think I can go to school AND afford a car? Hahahahahahahaha!" and then the international students who, if they're coming here, are probably insanely rich anyway, but generally aren't coming from countries where cars have been "a thing", and so they haven't picked up on things like "If you hit another car, do not simply try to drive through it."

This is quite possible.

...what.

How do you dent up an A7. They have only been on sale for like, 3 years.

The cars at my school are usually the Prius (which most people think is the coolest car in the world, because it's a hybrid! ) or an shitty upmarket SUV. If they do drive, you ask someone what car they drive and they response "A Lexus". They don't know the model, but because they drive a "Lexus" they think they're hot shit. FYI? It's an RX330.

It's sad because where I am, just outside of campus, there are tons of cool cars. I see DB9s and 458s about once every 2 months, and that's just when I decide to go downtown. Badass muscle cars line the streets in some places and I've seen a number of well-put-together JDM enthusiast cars. But my campus is a black hole. I blame the fact that our engineering department sucks.

Remember, parking bollards are more of a suggestion than an obstacle.
