I think they deliberately stuffed 5 in so that someone wouldn't see the image from above and think they were making a swastika... there is no reason that top right one is there otherwise.

It makes perfect sense. Suppose you enter from the bottom and want to make a right. If it were a giant regular roundabout, you'd have to go all the way around [in red] (since we're driving on the left). With the magic roundabout, you make a right at the mini roundabout and then a right at the second mini roundabout, and you're out [in green]!

I think part of what makes it so hard for many of us, at least for me, is that folk in Swindon drive on the wrong side of the road. I start to trace a line through it and then get all fouled up because my brain doesn't want to drive on the left.

I think it's basically a two-directional roundabout, if you could imagine a circular two-lane road. I'm sure once you see it working, and drive it, it would make sense.

Is that "magic" as in one of those magic eye puzzles? 'Cos the longer you stare at it the more you begin to see the way traffic flows through it, and then you blink and it's gone.
