More like it had been stolen way back in the day. Hey, my fastback
is
40 years old. The VIN on the dash number didn't match the VIN number under the front trunk. I found another VIN tag on the floor that was meant to go on the dash. I checked that against the title and that was the correct VIN. It wasn't stolen, it just had the dash pad changed at some point. Still scared the shit out of me.

Same thing happened for my bike. Previous owner decided to paint the frame, but in doing so, painted over the VIN sticker. Since the bike is an '82, the industry was still in transition to the standard VIN system. This means that the full VIN is not stamped anywhere into the frame.
Registering it was... interesting to say the least.
