Carsales are running the story that Toyota unveiled the Yaris Hybrid-R at the Frankfurt motor show today.

It's northing short of a 313kW (~419hp) super hybrid hatch concept.

Powered by a 224kW (300hp) 1.6L turbo and electric motors for either rear wheel can provide an extra 45kw each for a short period of time.

I really love the idea of the third electric motor mounted between the engine and gear box that converts excess torque to the rear electric motors to counter any torque steer.

Yes, yes, quite impressive, but it's still a Yaris.

Yaris meets BMW i3 color scheme and funky front maw... meh.

Hot Yaris sounds great.

On that note, people don't realize how much of an upgrade the current Yaris SE is over the L and LE.

-Electric steering gets firmed up
-Front springs get firmed up
-Rear drum brakes traded for discs
-Front disc brakes are larger
-Steel wheels get traded for alloys

That's to say nothing of the cosmetic work Toyota did (rear end looks much better than the two lower trims IMO).

...

okay, I feel like dogibadob now

as far as beige goes the Yaris is much more engaging to drive than the Corolla/Auris.

I'm just hoping this leads to Toyota getting their Rally mojo back. additionally, the Yaris R1A seems to be Toyota dipping their toes back into WRC.

inb4 "It's a Yaris" tsunami:

Kinja'd!!!

This car is somewhat special, even if the Yaris badge still applies.

Its turbocharged 1.6 engine was built by Toyota Motorsport GmbH and was called a slightly defanged version of the TS030 by German automotive press; it also meets the FIA guidelines for the GRE (Global Race engine) and could be run in several race series.

Picture related, as that's Toyota's 1.6 GRE.

Just waiting for someone to actually run one in a race.

haha too late, it's already started.

People sure love to hate the Yaris.

My first thought about the new 1.6 was how much does it cost and if it would fit in my ageing SW20. just look at those headers

It looks rather pink in that lights, I'd have preferred it in a deeper red. Or the Castrol rally colours.

those RPF1's certainly look better than the hideous 18" TRD wheels on the Hybrid-R concept.

All concept car wheels look like shit to me, so I agree.

This photo was taken under a helluva lot of lights. It was only shown at SEMA so there are no outdoor photos.

Besides, when you enter one in World Challenge TCB class you can paint it however you like ;)

I meant no offense, good Sir.

Just trying to throw you some bits and bobs about the car so you don't abandon it rightaway. ;-)

I did a google search and it seems to change colour dramatically depending on the photographer.

Here's one outdoor photo that I stumbled across.. it reminds me of the red paint Toyota used in the early 90's that has since faded.

No points for guessing where they got the Cod mouth idea from.

I wonder if it's a hint of what the facelifted 86/FR-S will look like.

That's pretty interesting.

The "Yarrrris" already sounded like a pirate. Adding more RRRRRR even adds to that.

It's cool :) I think it's a very cool drivetrain setup and the fact that they got it to fit into a Yaris is doubleplus good. Also to incorporate some of the tech used from their motorsport experience makes it even better. Nice to see Toyota show off something that is both sporty and green.
