Been watching Wheeler Dealers a lot lately and occasionally the little Italian roadsters come up and remind me how much I enjoy those little cars. I see several on craigslist, not all Italian obviously, and it looks like many can be had for under 4 grand USD. Things like Austin Healeys, Fiat and Alfa Romeo Spiders... what would be your dream roadster? Any years, any reason, under 4.5 grand. I like the look of the Austin Healey Sprite.
Preferably F/R style, let's see what we've got!
EDIT: Don't be boring and say Miata.......... :( ruining my fun

Best roadster for under 4 grand?
...I believe this answer is in order.

But seriously, the Miata is a great option. That and you pretty much covered all the bases.
Triumph TR4/5/6s are pretty cool, although I have no idea if they're in that price range.

Triumph Spitfire/MGB and TR3 or Tr6s seem to be available in the price range. I guess I'm looking for character and the Miata doesn't do it for me

A salvage title S2000? Maybe you might be able to get a MR2 spyder for that price?
90s Mercury Capri
You *might* be able to get a first-gen SLK or Z3.

A Miata is the only thing worth owning at $4k.
Alfa Spiders are $6k+
MGBs around $8k+
Triumph TR6 around $14k+
They can be found cheaper. But this is what it costs to get a half decent one.

Not around here. It's rain country, convertibles are cheap!

You said FR layout, but... MR2 Spyder, or if you're REALLY lucky, a Fiero with T-tops. The Fiero has structural rigidity going for it, and offers a V6 option.
Mid-engined cars are extremely fun to hoon in, due to the slightly better distribution of weight over the drive wheels. Beware of bump steer in Fieros (get an '88 if you can) and chassis flex in MR2s (which is actually worse on the spyder, due to obvious reasons).
Another thing to consider? Honda Del Sol. It's not strictly a convertible, given that it has a removable roof that stows in the trunk, but you get legendary reliability. They are kind of pigs though, if you get one put it on a diet, stat.

I like the ideas, I like the MR2 spyder but I'm not a Fiero fan. I've always had a sweet spot for the original MR2 as well

How about z3s? They're pretty cheap where I'm from..anyone with feedback on z3s here? 6 cylinder ones specifically

Rain country = rust country for any pre-galvanization roadster. :(

Don't take this the wrong way, but may I ask why you prefer the flobbery MR2 over the stronger, less stylistically challenged Fiero?

You can pick up a solid Midget or "box" (non bugeye) Sprite for under $4500. You'll also have a hard time finding a car that's more entertaining to drive. Pretty easy to work on as they're bog simple; you'll learn about carburetors and points and condensers and other arcane totems of a bygone era. Look out for rust and DPO (damn previous owner) bodged up wiring...

The second Gen non spyder mr2. Not the first Gen box monster.

Ah. I always seem to forget about that one. I still think the Fiero ass end looks nicer, but those were an improvement over the first gen.
