This is so undeniably epic. Have you ever heard of the Lamborghini Countach QVX?

Japanese mechanics really are out of their minds. I love it.

Neat!
I have not heard of this.
From the two minutes of research, it appears it has been seen exactly one time since the invention of the internet.
So, it's a trivia questions with a QV engine and taillights.
The car made a promising debut in April 1985, and ran a few races without any success, but the money soon ran out and the Countach QVX disappeared.

Interesting - it had a 100% record of finishing every race it ever entered, with an average finishing position if fifth. Which means it qualified every time, did not suffer a single DNF. Amazing durability, and a great record, until you realize that....
Out of the seven events it registered for, it only showed up for one. The car raced ONCE.
Also - Tiff Needell drove it.

This is an awesome trivia question.

That's one of the greatest cars I've never heard of. Where and when did it race?

Thad video made me wonder where have all the batshit-crazy, run what you brung racing series gone? I'd love to see a series with this as its tech regs: must carry a driver, must have no more or less than four wheels, must weigh at least X,XXX kilograms. Engineers have fun!

What? No. This looks like every other prototype race car. The Countach is a masterpiece of insanity that hasn't been topped by a mainstream supercar before or since.

The Countach is a blocky angled mess. It's what you'd get if a rhombus, a triangle and a hexagon had a drunken threesome, and could somehow conceive a car this way. I'm just not impressed by it. I don't even know what's going on with that bi-window.

You sir, are wrong. That is a photo of the most perverted version, courtesy of American regs. THIS is the Countach:

It's what you'd get if a rhombus, a triangle and a hexagon had a drunken threesome, and could somehow conceive a car this way
Now it's clear to me that you've missed the point of this car. How could a geometric threesome possibly be a bad thing? Think of the environment and era this car was introduced in. Lamborghini blew everyone away with the Muira, and they knew they had to do it again with something radically different. It was so forward-looking that it lasted from 1974-1990. I'd never call it pretty, but it is absolutely insane, and what else are supercars for?

How could a geometric threesome possibly be a bad thing?
Because it sounds like it would feel painful and look awful? No amount of lube would make sharp corners bumping together fun.
Lamborghini blew everyone away with the Muira, and they knew they had to do it again with something radically different.
This, right here, is the fundamental problem every creator faces when trying to follow up a hit. People didn't love the Muira because it outdid the car that came before it; they loved it because it was beautiful in a way only a car made by Lamborghini could be. The Countach is completely not that. It pales in comparison to the Muira in every single way, and thanks to you, I now know why.
but it is absolutely insane, and what else are supercars for?
We need to stop crediting insanity for insanity's sake. By itself, it's not a noble, or even desirable attribute. Yeah, ok, you designed some insanely eye-scalding vehicle, but how does that differentiate your design from any shitty body kit you could buy on ebay? To contrast this car with modern supercars, the P1 is insane too; insanely gorgeous, with insanely advanced technology. See that? There's lots of practical benefit to go along with insanity, with advancing the state of the art of cars as a bonus. Beyond insanity, what does the Countach (and its successor, the Veneno) offer? Merely designing an insanely ugly car is not enough. Anyone can do that.

So now someone needs to find footage of the 1986 Invitation Race at Kyalami.
In 1986 Tiff jumped onto the abortive Lamborghini foray into Group C. Financing came from Unipart, Tiff's faithful backers. The car was an old Tiga GC83 chassis rebuilt during 1985-'86 into what was entered as a "Lamborghini Countach QVX". The bulky engine originated from a Countach road car, being a 5.7-litre 60-degree V12 developing some 650bhp. The initially promising three-year and rumoured £4 million programme looked attractive on paper. As in many cases over the years the project ultimately came to nothing. Tiff appeared in the car just once. This was in the non-championship invitation race held at Kyalami late in 1986. It would never had raced at all if it hadn't been for the appearance money from the isolated South African apartheid regime. Tiff drove the 500km single handedly and the device was reliable enough to actually see the chequered flag at the end. A fifth place was his reward.

If only looking at that image you posted, I would probably agree. But look at where the Countach came from. It went on sale in 1973, 19 freakin' 73. I saw one in 77 when I was 7 and I thought an alien spaceship had landed. This was when I lived in Europe and seeing Italian sports cars was not uncommon. There was nothing like it at the time.
