We're going on holiday to the USA during the coming 2 weeks and are wondering if we should rent a car for the drive from DC to NYC or just take Amtrak. We want to do it in a day (on the 9th of September, so a Monday, if that matters).

We are travelling from the Petworth neighborhood in DC to Queens in NYC. Any recommendations for a rental company which would be accessible by public transport on both sides in case car is the best option? We have 2 suitcases and 2 people, so something smallish and sporty would be good (if anyone rents out Miatas or something)

Miata's have a 1-suitcase limit. I know from experience.

Sorry I can't help with a rental company close to those areas though.

You can either drive or train in under half a day - it's not that far.

But unless you need a car in NY, do yourself a favor and take the train. They run regularly in the mornings and evenings...one of the expresses will do it in under three hours. You're not missing any scenery by doing that and saving yourself the traffic headache (and tolls) that are Interstate 95 and the New Jersey Turnpike. There's plenty of public transport and of course taxi cabs to get you to Queens - I'd take a cab if I had the suitcases.

Washington Union Station is beautiful and worth visiting in any case; New York Penn Station is a dump but be sure to visit Grand Central Terminal.

The Northeast Regional will be much easier than driving and dealing with traffic on 95. It leaves you in Penn Station, from Penn Station you can hop up a train to Times Square and transfer to the 7, which will take you out to Queens. There are also other options.
