So you've all seen the simple beauty of the Volvo Coupé Concept that probably won't be made as it's a design concept. But at the presentation, a car that will happen also appeared, a long-awaited second-generation XC90, loaded with the new design philosophy and probably other stuff. This is Volvo's first Geely-funded new car.
As you can see, they've more or less applied their new house style to the same basic shape, with tail lights that each look like half a pair of scissors, and a pretty square shape, which is almost refreshing in a world of increasingly rounded-off SUVs pretending to be coupés for no good reason. The box is back and sexier than ever! The XC90 will use Volvo's new "Scalable Architecture", which sounds like some modular thing or a chassis design that they can, y'know, scale up or down to suit.

Why is Volvo suddenly competing with Audi for who can have the biggest grille and pick-up trucks for who can have the biggest emblems?

It's not as big as Audis by any stretch IMO. It's quite wide, I suppose. The XC90s is big but all SUV grilles are, apart from BMW because of their kidneys. I'd say it's in proportion with the rest of the car.

Yeah, I suppose you are right. I guess I am just used to looking at the old XC90 grille, which is much smaller, but since it came out over a decade ago it probably didn't require the much higher hood for pedestrian crash regulations. Still, I'm not a huge fan of the front end or the massive emblems. I hope it looks better once fully revealed.
