Is there no point where you bring the peace back? I know this is an off topic blog/forum, but it is mostly based on car stuff. It really sucks to come here and have to wade through a bucket load of stupid posts that are totally irrelevant to the main topic of this forum/blog. Can you folks at least set some basic rules for content and maybe issue some comments/warnings regarding those? Thank you, I am leaving now. (not really, but I feel like it)

Pro tip: Scroll down or hit that "PgDn" button until you see a big block of text under the title and next to the image. It might be something you will maybe read or just a legit article you would have passed up anyway.

I understand your complaint... But what can we do? I mean, sometimes it's a slow day, and people just end up goofing around to have fun... And I have to be honest... Some of the "OppositeLock" parody things were pretty funny.

Although I do wish there were an off-off-topic forum... so Oppo could be used by people who actually post car related stuff, to post car related stuff. Just call it the "Parking lot" or something... Somewhere for people to just goof off, posting GIFs, memes, etc. to their hearts delight.

Not trying to be mean, but was there really ever an official rulebook that said Oppo had to be 100% related to cars?

Exactly. Let's keep the off topic forum on topic. Wait... (Was sarcasm)

I promise that for every stupid thing I post, I will at least consider putting the effort into posting something remotely related to automobiles. No guarantees, but I would estimate that a full 10 percent of my work will be interesting to at least 5 percent of the members here.

I absolutely agree! If we can manage to cut out all these bullshit non-super-cereal posts, oppo can be condensed down to a manageable 5 articles a day. Think about how efficient that is! We call all finish catching up on oppo in a matter of minutes and none of us will actually have to interact with each other. Also, we can all remain completely faceless and shallow. Fuck getting to know what interests someone besides cars or making each other laugh. That shit is for hippies and degenerates.

I think Oppo is here to keep that stuff off of Jalopnik's front page.

So... if Oppo is off topic, the real problem here is actually the car related content that gets posted, clearly.

It's over, the posts that got mixed in with the game aren't that hard to find and authors can reschedule their posts to float them back up if they want. Just enjoy the cheap laughs, try to have a little fun with it and reeeelax.

Gimme a day or two. I will drag something in worth reading. Hell, if you're a real redneck, you may have read it already, as most of it went into an old fashioned paper magazine a while back, but it's still a fun story and makes Doug D's recent road trip look like an outing to the grocery store.

Speaking as an admin: We prefer to keep our hands off unless its for NSFW or really gross shit. "Rules" are currently being worked on, we hope to have a draft ready for release soon.

Speaking as a reader: I was gone for the whole "Opposite_____" thing, or else you would seen some car posts from me. The best way to combat these sorts of things is to post what you want to see, and attempt to lead by example.

"No guarantees, but I would estimate that a full 10 percent of my work will be interesting to at least 5 percent of the members here."

Exactly, I end up wading through most stuff when it is serious/on topic. Hell, I think 1/3 of the stuff generally is off topic/poorly written/rehash of old news. It's just not noticeable when it's a string of everybody doing basically the same thing.

I know where you're coming from. I was quite confused the first time I saw a dance party break out (which I think is usually Friday nights) and I don't like the creep out (which have been kept under control by the mods), so don't feel totally alienated by these things. I don't usually participate in them... I just happened to start this one, entirely by accident, mind you (you could say that Rkmudkips actually started it by mocking my post, but that's neither here nor there). There are limits to it.

I think you are missing my point. I like seeing a lot of posts each day. That is why I spend more time here than the FP. And I like off topic posts as well. I just don't like 15-20 that are basically similar in a row.

I wish there were an Off-Topic "ParkingLot" like The Lead Footed Loudmouth suggested. I really don't mind the light-hearted fun - on occasion. But in reality, I want to read about what other folks see car-wise where they live, things like that. I also love seeing young and old alike get a chance to hone their writing skills, share opinions, and revel in our ridiculous obsession over cars, trucks, planes, and motorcycles. It was thrilling to see the School Bus Review get on the FP. I was genuinely excited.

I'd like to see the ParkingLot kept weird, but I think we might be in the minority. It's hard to say.

Here's the problem: for every person who hates the off topic stuff, there's another who likes it. The camps are even, so far as we can tell. It's tough to just make all of it forbidden when a bunch of people are participating. We can't just blanket ban all the people involved. A lot of them are good, regular contributors just having fun.

It's also part of oppo's madcap nature and I wouldn't expect it to go away on its own. But yeah, sometimes we get sick of it, too. Mainly I just ignore it, and stuff like self-baiting or trying to force a theme to happen are way worse and more annoying. If it takes off organically...think of it as a rash instead of a scar. Latenights and weekends, I think the tolerance for it is higher, too. There's less content to disrupt in general.

But if one person is repeatedly posting ice cream head or something, screwing up all of oppo just for lulz, we're not OK with that.

Good points, my Mod friend. And maybe I am overreacting. I do not hate the off topic stuff at all. In fact, I welcome it for the most part. I post it from time to time. I just do not like to sift through it for 5 minutes to get to what I came here to read.

I can agree that sometimes these running gag posts can get long in the tooth, but at the end of the day I'll take that over nothing but serious posts. I've always felt Oppo is a a group of friends first and a source of information second. I don't want it to sound like I don't care about good articles and I want this to all devolve into anarchy, because that is not the case. I just feel like there are already places to get cold, hard gear head information efficiently. I also don't think efficiency was ever one of the foundations of Oppo.

I just remember the real old days when there was no oppo forum. Everything was on the front page and when there was little content to post, people would start a "threadjack" and really get some conversations started that were way off topic.

And that, Kids, is why we can have nice things.

I thought the rule was that if you posted something off-topic, the toll was a sweet car image or wallpaper or something for the trouble. If that's being followed, sure, go at it. Just give me some car porn to bring me back to your post!

This is a tough one. I mean, Oppo started as an unreadable, unusable, undesirable place. Then it sort of gelled and things were good. And funny. Then it became something else. After that, the kinjapocalypse, when things became "serious." But it's not serious. It's just a bunch of great people having fun on a platform that someone built for that purpose.

No offence man, but it's all in good fun. These kinds of things don't happen too frequently, so it's not too much of an inconvenience. As long as it doesn't outweigh the amount of car posts, it's all groovy.

Fair enough. And in an earlier draft of my response, I actually typed that I do laugh and sometimes even participate in the frivolity! But, I just enjoy reading stuff more. Not just serious stuff though. The Bus review was a hoot and there are other things like it. Sometimes the GIF parade can seem a little lazy, but not always. There's no simple answer. It is what it is.

Way I see it, they made this place, people joined in, made it more than expected. Some people contribute awesome (pictures/stories/jokes), some people are willful jerks, some people are clueless, and that's a pretty representative sample of ... people.

I try to keep my interactions on the awesome end, and ignore the rest. The more people participate in the good stuff, the more that becomes the expectation and maybe the norm.

Oh cool, I'm a regular enough poster to be mentioned here!

This discussion seems to have progressed rather well without my input though. I was asleep during the whole "opposite ______" pun thing (and when this was posted), so I missed it.

I'm usually fine with off-topic posts and other shenanigans, but it seems that last night really got out of hand, just like the bad joke theme someone started some day not too long ago. I'm glad I slept through it.
