Who cares? I'm sure for the vast majority of us, this car is not relevant to our interests.

Is it a terrible car? No, not really. Is it the best car in it's segment? No, definitely not. Does it satisfy the needs of it's target audience? Yes, it does actually. It offers everything they need, and nothing they don't.

With that being said, just because this a 'beige' car, intended for people with basic transportation needs, does not put it above reproach. Yes, it could be much better in quite a few areas, as it's primary competition has surpassed in many categories.

At the end of the day however, this car is like a basic digital watch. Like a Timex, it's the quartz equivalent of cars. But it does get a job done.

I prefer the mechanical nature of self-winding automatic wrist watches, so the majority of my watch collection is made up of those. I can appreciate the intricacy of an automatic, the subtle sweep of the second hand as it makes it way around the dial. But the average person looking for an instrument to tell time really doesn't care for, much less understand the romance of a mechanical watch. Comparing a Timex to a Patek Philippe is a pointless exercise.

And that's what the Corolla is all about. There's no benefit comparing it to a stick shift hot hatch, or the fine styling of a more focused, more fun to drive sedan. There's people out who will drive any car as long it has four wheels, a steering wheel, radio and air conditioning.

So ignore the Corolla if you must; I'll be hooning as the internet war wages on.

I guess I just don't understand why people have turned to defending the Corolla for its beige-ness.

It is a decent car. There's no doubt about it. It will get you from point A to point B safely, reliably, quietly, comfortably, etc...

But this is Jalopnik. We prefer to get from point A to point B quickly, sideways, in a cloud of smoke, and sometimes not at all because we bought an Alfa.

As a result, I hate this car. I hate that it compromises to the point of being mid-pack in the segment for every sort of parameter. I hate that it has as much character as a wet blanket. I hate that it uses archaic technology. I hate that Toyota can pull shit like this and no one cares, but mostly I hate it because it will still sell in the 100s of thousands while other much, much better cars in the segment that car manufacturers busted their ass on to be great will still sell no one near it simply because of the badge on the front.

I'm starting to think that this is some viral marketing campaign.

I hate beige just as much as the next Jalop, and I hate that Toyota sells these in bunches to the mindless masses. So that's why I just ignore it. There's plenty of other enthusiast-minded cars, both new and used that make me feel a whole helluva lot better.
