Took this earlier today. I rather like the 500L in black. It slims it down a bit. And the rain made me think of every movie with John Cusack in it. Because rain.

I saw a 500L for the first time last week, and wasn't quite sure what it was at first. Is it even based on the same chassis as a regular 500?

It is not. It is actually derivative of the Fiat Grande Punto and Alfa Romeo MiTo. It's actually a pretty diverse platform, and looks as if it might underpin quite a few of the small vehicles in the next few years for Fiat, Lancia, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep. Not Alfa, however, as they are moving to an all RWD platform. The dimensions are very deceiving, as it looks larger (and it really is spacious) but fits in the footprint of a typical C-segment car (Focus, etc).
Fiat USA are looking at the 500 as a sub-brand in their line up, but in time you'll see a larger American selection. The rumor is next up is a compact 4x4, which I think will be very well received. Especially since it will likely come with a third pedal.

Interesting! I figured it had to be a different platform, but I certainly wouldn't have guessed the same one as the MiTo. I think an off-road version of the 500L (with AWD - hey I can dream) would be a pretty nifty little vehicle.
I saw it at a local carnival/fair - it was parked outside, representing the local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Fiat/Ram dealership. I ended up entering a free draw for up to $40k towards a new vehicle, which got me thinking about which Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Fiat/Ram vehicle I'd pick. My first pick would probably be an 500 Abarth. Second would be to put the money toward a Viper, drive it for a week, then sell it.
