I don't really read car blogs. I like it here on Oppo(more of a forum. . . kind of? what is oppositelock?) because people are nice. But if you want a nice place to learn about cars:

Seconded. Oppo/Jalop are really the only ones i frequent (aside from my two classic Celica forums http://classic-celica.com/ and http://www.celica-gts.com/forums/index.p… and I know for a fact there's more than a couple Opponauts that are also members of those forums ) I lurked here for ages before pulling the pin and registering and it was mainly because of the community.
I keep coming back to Oppo because of the people and the subject matter.

I honestly don't see how he thinks it's so negative. I can see getting tired of the jokes if that's not your thing, but I usually find them amusing. Most reviews on Jalopnik are fairly positive and I think the guys do a good job of going into drives with an open mind.

I don't know much about the community over on reddit, nor care much about their opinions. That said, Kinja has ruined the front page for me. Not the format, but the exclusivity. When every comment you make is an audition it grows tiresome and frustrating. So, I pass time on Oppo when I need some down time. Good people, and usually car/plane/train oriented discourse. I go days now without hitting the front page. That used to be unthinkable. Shame on Kinja no matter how slick the tech is (or isn't).

Truth hurts guys. It's why I haven't been over to the J in over 2 maybe 3 weeks. It's like a high school clique. All of the best comments are always buried in the Soviet style pending approval section. Oppo is where it's at. It's the chance for us common folk to hear from other common folk and be heard by other common folk.

I'm with you. I love the stories, I just love to talk a lot too and getting grayed out is the equivalent of being talked over in real life. I don't see why they have such a strict anti-troll system in place. I've never noticed much of a troll issue.

Right now I mostly just go back because you guys are pretty chill compared to the rest of the automotive universe, and most any other car commenting community feels alien to me right now. I do check FP often, but I don't really find much threads or comments I can contribute to all too well.

Yeah... I come here to avoid people like that. We get some trolls through here, but mostly I only have time to hit one car blog/forum/community on a regular basis, and I've settled here. For mostly good people, mostly lack of trolls, low pressure conversations, and the ability to scroll through a metric butt-ton of car-pron whenever I want. Let's all share the same jokes all the time and drive diesel-stick-miata-wagons. That's fine with me. As long as it keeps that loser away.

I wholeheartedly agree. It's gotten to the point where I rarely comment anymore, even though I really enjoy this site. Speaking of, I have no idea how posting/commenting privileges are granted on Oppo, either.

Do I have to draw a pentagram with oil on my driveway and sacrifice small gaskets in a pyre? Or just drink two gallons of wiper fluid while the editors watch? Lord only knows.

Look the FP is a silly place which I go to on occasion, but honestly I come to Oppo way more because the community here is cool. Stopped going to reddit because I got really tired of the teenage bullshit that goes on there. So many negative people in one place, I mean even r/funny fucking depresses me with all their drama.

And hence why I've really tapered off my Reddit use. The mods depending on the subreddit can either be nonexistent or overbearing, the subreddit rules tend towards the ridiculous, and most of the time, I just would rather put my energy elsewhere.

To be honest, its a lot like an unregulated FP. Except with less actual content. Unless you are already with the approved crowd, you tend to end up in the ignore queue, and comments tend to only be made on things already found pleasing to the hive mind.

There are better wastes of time for me. :)

Fourthed. I just made that a thing. The one commenter does have a small point about some of the FP lurkers (who are likely Gawker spill over, and don't usually participate in Oppo), but generally speaking I think our community is filled with enthusiasts who are exactly that, Enthusiastic. We pretty much love anything with a motor, we appreciate each other's rides, we "pic bait" one another out of respect, we share our projects, we have strong discourse without any hint of personal attacks, and seem to have a lot of common off topic interests, too. There are really only 4 things we truly rag on: Donks, Tuners who lie ("Sweet Mustang GT-R, brah"), Asshat drivers/parkers/street racers, and the auto makers when they disrespect us by producing garbage. All in all, it's a very fun community. And with it being a small-ish community, I think we avoid a lot of the dickery that goes on elsewhere. I was in high school during the nascent years of BBSes, and Japanese import tuning was starting to rise to prominence in the US ( mid-late 90's). As more import tuner BBSes sprang up, I noticed a trend. Too many fanboys were spreading too much hate. Eventually I tired of it and pulled away from being an active member of any forum. What brought me into Oppo was the camaraderie, enthusiasm, and love of shenanigans. It was the forum I had always been looking for. And we are diverse. I've noticed that we have Opponauts from around the world, of ages between teenagers and grand parents, and we each have our own favorite brand or style. And that is what makes this community fun to participate in.

The only place I know that loves diesel stick shift Miata wagons as much if not more than we do is Hooniverse. Someone ought to suggest that just to trololololo. "AUGHHHH I CAN'T ESCAPE THIS!"

I sometimes drop in on the FP to post something that isn't any of those things, which I can since I'm an approved commenter and don't get grayed.

But most of the time I just hang out on Oppo, see if Speedhunters has posted anything and have recently begun browsing a bit on Japanese Nostalgic Car.
