So that Kotaku article on the FP about the 8-year-old that killed the old lady and how idiotic it is for everyone to be talking up the video games angle? Um... Kotaku... you might want to check out the sensationalist shit being published over on your parent site Gawker before you start pointing fingers...

Gawker's very own headline " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I was actually about to make a post on here this morning about how pathetic the media's coverage of the incident was, before I saw Gawker's article and realized that there was no point...

Gawker is like that beautiful woman with that fucking ugly face that spews stupid, ignorant, hateful things all of the time. But her car, athleticism, body, job, lifestyle, and intentions are all pure and good.

...But she still has the worst possible brain and mouth.

Discussions like these make my brain hurt. Why is it so hard to just blame stupidity/lack of common sense for shit like this?

you can't punish common sense or stupidity. Or at least they can't pay for good legal representation.

If I were a news network, I'd bring up the fact that they live in Slaughter, Louisiana, and try to turn that into sensationalism to turn the tables.

Just kidding, I'm sure it's a nice town. Which I actually kind of want to visit just for the name.

Well, problem number one is that you went outside of the OT Communities and braved the front pages. Problem number 2? See problem number 1.

I dunno man, the Sheriff's Office seemed to have made the GTA link and Gawker are just running with it. It's a damn shame that video games caused a loaded gun to be left in reach of children.

Was 'body' supposed to represent Jezebel? I'm sure they'd love that.

Just because the sheriff's office first made the link does not mean that media organizations have no choice but to parrot it. They can still mention the video game angle put forth by the sheriff's office, but make it clear that the sheriff's office is the source of the crackpot theory. Instead of "8-year-old shoots woman after playing video game", the headline could be "8-year-old shoots woman, sheriff blames video game".

Yeah. I really should just block Gawker entirely from my computer. Nothing good ever comes from going there. Sometimes I do enjoy the spectacle though...

Still, playing excessively violent games like that at such an impressionable age certainly did not help. If he had been parented correctly and taught the dangers of firearms, he would have been less likely to shoot his grandma. And had he not been so desensitized by such graphic media, he would have been aware of the consequences that come with weapons in real life.

He should never have been playing that game. Desensitized or not, it's rated M, meaning 17+. Not t mention everyone by this point should be well aware of what GTA is, and even if they aren't, one look at the box should tell you it isn't for kids

We both know the main fault was having a loaded weapon where a kid could get to it. Even if he had been playing Gran Turismo he probably would have thought it was cool to pick up the gun and pretend to shoot his grandma, he's 8, they do dumb things.

but.. I don't think the media should omit what the Sheriff's Office has said in their official statement. The media doesn't have the responsibility to make the Sheriff sound any less dumb
