Wait Laguna Seca has a 92dB sound limit? How do they even have races there?

As far as I know it does limit the events there, they are considering 100db but I'm not really following the news.

Is it from a certain distance because every race car I have heard is ungodly loud(the way it should be). . . I do not approve.

It could be just for civilian track days, not sure, if anyone knows speak up! I've been there for classic events and I didn't hear anyone speak of it.

I was at the Motorsports Reunion last year and the Mazda rotories were easily breaking 92db. Maybe it's because Mazda owned the track and the cars...

There's a little hut on one of the hillsides that monitors the sound levels. Wind speed and direction play a part in getting by or not if your car is close to the limit. The veterans (not me) know where to lay off the throttle a little to beat the system. It's a bummer, but somewhat understandable when you consider how close some houses are and the fact that Laguna Seca is a state park - and that state is CA of course (home of over-regulation, for better or worse). I'm not entirely sure if the sound limit applies to pro race days. I feel like there are some days where it either goes up (the limit) or away entirely. But surely those days are limited.

Monitoring point is on one of the hillsides to the east. So even if you're over at the tailpipe, you have a chance of getting by. That said I think the track marshals monitor on their own because on the state park staff have access to the sound meter, I believe.

The limit is for civilian track days. Some neighbors keep complaining about the noise. The meter is supposed to be under the bridge between turns 5 and 6. My crudely drawn green arrow is pointing to the meter.

I've been there for events with classic race cars and I know they were much louder than that. They must have exceptions for big events. You can't ask people to modify a 1950's race car ect. I'm sure its mostly for the track days, but its unfortunate since the track is where we can go to run cars without street regulations and that circuit has a couple lovely sections. I'm happy to say Fuji has no such regulations! I just wish I was at Spa listening to the engines echo through the trees.

I really want to get to Spa someday. My guess is that Laguna Seca gets a set number of days each year where they're permitted to exceed the sound limit, and that they get fined for each day they exceed. So they ration, and the club days get the short end.
