Is there anybody else who would like to band with me on this? I don't hate Miatas, but they will never be for me.

I kind of agree. In stock form they are no good. After a few parts they are better.

If you don't want a small, light, low-powered rear wheel drive roadster that's not expensive for what it is - and although that sounds like heresy, there are good reasons not to - then the Miata/MX-5 isn't for you. If you have plenty of money to spend on a car, for example, there are others that cost more and do similar things better. It's a car that's loved for value rather than outright ability.

Even if you do have money to spend, you may decide on Miata if you're after a sports car. A few years ago my dad cross-shopped a Merc SL and a MAzda MX-5, and decided on the MX-5 because it was such great value that the extra for the Mercedes didn't make sense.

I will agree. I just don't like them. They drive fine, but I think the over hype of them is what really pushes me away. They are OK cars, not AMAZING cars that people make them out to be and rather than admitting it, people try to defend them by dissing all the better cars out there. My S2000 was a magnet for Miata hate. It was like every middle aged guy in a Miata had to come try to convince me his Miata was better.

I'm not with you on this, because i think they're loads of fun, every time i drive one, i'm grinning ear-to-ear. However i don't think i ever own one, because a) they're as go-to of a solution for us car people, as a Camry for non-car people, and b) because there are cars out there, that are at least as good, or better, but are less common. Case in point: my AW11, which has specs almost exactly like the NA Miata, only it's mid engine, has space in the cabin and a useful trunk, and handles probably even better, because of the closed roof and the MR layout. So even though i like the Miata, i'm sort of with you. Duh....

I like value, but not as much as what turns me off about the Miata — the car's styling and low power. Sure, I could go down the turbocharged route, but I don't like a delay in power.

I just don't like the hype around it. I know a Lotus fanboy who truly hates it though, he calls it "an Elan for women and homosexuals".

I'm with you. I've never driven one, so my opinion doesn't have much weight, but there's not much about it that would draw me to it to drive one. I don't hate them, but I'd rather have something else in my garage. I'm sure they're fun to drive, but I don't think I'd be proud to own one, if that makes sense...

You mean there are more than me that don't give a crap about 'hot hatches, diesel wagons with manuals" and Miata's? I feel a comradery growing here. :)

Yes, I don't have a liking for hatches or wagons as well. Very, very few exceptions for those.

As I am 6'1" Miata's aren't really the best choice for me. Plus Mazda for a long period of time ruined them with the god awful derpy-derp face they put on them. But I see the charm in the older classic non-derp face versions of the Miata- its a MGB that is willing to start when wet. Plus, a reliable fun to drive convertible that you can buy used for $5k off Craigslist? Not bad. I understand the charm even if they are not the right car for me.

It depends on what you use it for. I've owned two. The 99 I owned was just for track days, so it was never "too small". The 2012 my wife and I owned as a 2nd DD didn't last very long before we traded it in.

And as far as the concept goes, I love it. But I prefer the moar power approach and like a throaty V8 powering my fun car.

I'll never have one simply because I don't fit. I'm both too tall and too wide. But I probably wouldn't buy one even if I did because I favor torque and acceleration.

I'll be honest, I like them more when there aren't alternatives on the market. When the S2k was out, and now tht the 86 is here, they just don't do it for me like before. I think some of their specialness is or was their uniqueness. Now that the industry is taking notice, the alternatives are always better.

He drives an MGA with an MGB engine swap and wears tight yellow pants. Take your own conclusions.
