And it's made me sad knowing that I can't go out and buy one right now without a lot of cash, and a lot of rule bending.

Man, now I'M thinking of the Avantime, and how awesome it would be to drive a convertible minivan coupe down the Pacific Coast.

Imagine cruising through Yosemite in it.

God damn, I want one so badly.

That is a sad story, bro. If I had £3000, I could pop out and buy one today. Yay me. Actually, I might even consider it if I had the money. My kids would love it.

I've a really hard time understanding why this is appeling to some people in America. This must be a serious case of "grass is always greener on the other side".

In Europe, those things didn't sell. They were seriously overpriced minivans with no interior space, overweight, underpowered, unreliable, not really comfortable, with a really lousy fit and finish in some places and ... well it's really ugly, especially in person.

To me, this is just like if somebody from Europe was going ape-shit over a 2008 Buick Lacrosse, just because it's american, so it's different from what's on the road in his country.

I get that people are liking "odd" cars, I get that some people from america lust over old citroëns like the SM or the DS. But why an Avantime ?! It's terrible !

The Avantime isn't terrible, that's sacrilege. It was just terribly overpriced from new, so sales weren't good. If they'd put it on sale for anything like the price of a family car, they'd have had a huge hit, but unfortunately it ended up competing with top-spec Saabs and Volvos, or mid-range BMWs, and so-on - at least in price terms.

If you've ever been in one, you'll be in no doubt why it is that people want Avantimes: there are few nicer interiors, few nicer cars to travel in, this side of a RR Phantom (which wasn't even out then). But not many people were going to spend BMW money on a Renault.

It's eccentric, a novel concept and interesting . Unlike that Buick you mentioned. Would I buy one myself? No. But I get why people like them. And I'm as European as they come.

Well, I guess you have a point, it's eccentric.

I still have a hard time thinking why people would go and get something "just to be eccentric".

As for davedave point on price, I'm still not sure it would have sold even with "family car prices", for that you could get something like a Renault Espace, which still looks like a minivan but have the advantages of one, it's spacious and comfortable for more than 2 people.

"... and children still scream with delight when they see it, because children react to silliness with the kind of delight we should all feel, and then the world would be a better place."

Damn well said.

Euroland lets you pick up one of these from about 2.5k Euro ... spend a little more and it'll look like this pristine example with tastefully fitting wheels.

Kinja'd!!!

I never liked the odd upper bit of the rear light design, but the rest of the car looks more at home now than it did in 2001.

Part of it is eccentricity, and the rest is just x-factor.

I can't articulate why it's so appealing. It just is.
