This is what happens if your hatch cover is not put back in its place and it contains light items, and you decide to go on a highway with the windows down.
My brother had used my GTI and failed to put back the hatch cover. On my way home today I enter the highway and was promptly assaulted by flying debris. I noticed a brief flash of something in my rearview mirror but thought it was outside the car. Moments later a reusable shopping bag(DOES NOT BELONG IN CAR) flys into the front seat and accosts me. I begin to raise the windows but it is to late. A roll of paper towels, being possessed by a wind god, has become a malevolent tendril which seeks to blind its prey before going for the kill. Aided by the lack of wind provided by the automatic windows, I was able to pry the towels from my face and subdue the creature.
I was told that there were 3 bags so evidently one flew out my window. Still pissed that the bags were left in my car and my cover not put back. Paper towels I always have in a car and they wouldn't have been a problem if said cover was in place.
Note to hatchback owners: This is important.

Also, if you drive a convertible, that stack of napkins you got at the drive-through and unthinkingly set on the passenger seat will become airborne on the freeway and fly directly into your eyes. Learned that one this morning.

I once had a piece of dirt fly into my eye while driving the Wrangler with the top down. I had to pull over for a few seconds to recover.

I once had a pair of pants hit me in the face that way.

That happens to me pretty much every day. Just close the affected eye, rub it and keep driving. I really should get my top fixed now that I think of it.

After having a gigantic moth splatter against the b-pillar right beside my head and getting smacked in the lip by an unknown insect, I always wear sunglasses when driving with all the windows down. I can't imagine what would have happened if either of those hit me in the eye.

I drive my cherokee sport with the windows down so I can smoke...and flick ash into my own eyes, apparently.

Nice Mk5, I have one myself and I can relate.
My fianceé has been having an allergy problem with the AC lately (I already decontaminated the system and changed the filter) so we've driving with the windows down. most of the time is no problem but the days we're hauling stuff to our new home and I have to fold the seats and remove the cover. Shit all over the car

I almost never use the AC for some reason, so this came as a complete surprise to me.
