How hard are Subaru Transmissions?

I have an old 5-speed trans from a 99 legacy that had some issues and I ended up replacing with a donor one many years ago. I am now left with a trans with no use and is slightly broken, doesn't go in to any gears after going in to reverse. Basically, I am bored and want to tear it apart and learn transmissions a bit and possibly try and fix it so I could make some money selling it. I have some mechanical knowledge but have never taken apart a trans or anything of the sort before. I have the factory service manual, tools, space, and time. Anyone have any experience with this? Would I need any special tools? I mean it's just sitting there begging for me to do something with it.

in serious answers realm, I don't think you'd get much selling a broken one, tearing it open seems worth the lessons learned.

as far as special tools... I'm trying to think but no. Socket set, and a torque wrench if you hope to make it work in the end. But no torque wrench if you have no desire to put it all abck together

Considering the fact that you have the service manual, I'd say spend some time reading through it thoroughly to identify any special tools. Barring any unobtanium tools, I'd say go for it. What's the worst that will happen, you'll still have a broken tranny and you'll have learned firsthand the inner workings of a Subi auto tranny...

Sounds like a good plan. I think all the special tools I was seeing is if I were going to actually take the gears/synchros off. At least I can see what is going on in that witchcraft machine underneath me

I think as long as I am not taking gears off and all that I should be fine. Looks like It will be a fun mess to play with.

That's only an automatic. Manuals are much simpler, from what I've seen.

From what limited understanding I have, yes.

Those are just the channels that route the fluid to different places to facilitate the changing of gears somehow (magic). I know that a shift kit will change the pressures in the grooves by changing the size of small metal balls that plug the holes at the ends of the grooves.

And there are some gears on the other side.

My transmission knowledge is now exhausted.
