Would anyone like to say a word or two about DD'ing bucket seats? Looking at a Momo Start for the NA. I'm sick of of bracing my skinny ass from sliding across my stock leather seats with collapsing bolstering.

I drove a friends car with buckets and 4 point harness as a DD for a week and it was the most miserable thing ever. Of course it doesn't helped that I was over 100 kg. And with the wight issue I felt like I was in a cage and was hot. Entering is no problem, it is getting out that will make you want to just stay in the car. And the harness is another level of awfull. Clunky to put, clunky to get out. If you don't put it for some short distance, it fucks up with the ergonomics and they are not very good to begin with. Personally I will not DD any car with bucket seats, it is just to much hassle not so much the lack of comfort.

It all depends (in my experience) on how big you are.

I'm built like Filipe Massa, so I would have no trouble with it.

I've only driven a car with a bucket seat once before, but from that experience and based on the two previous replies it sounds like I'd have no trouble at all DD'ing it since I'm skinny as hell (and only about 5 foot 9-10, I haven't measured in a while).

I daily drove with these for about 2 years. It was fine and completely justifiable when I was going to track events once every 3-4 weeks, but once I had to cut back on the track visits the reduced time spent on track in the buckets did not make up for the discomfort of daily driving in them.

My suggestion is to look into a product called CG Locks. They're cheap and easy and do a great job at keeping you from sliding about.

I have dd'ed buckets for 3 years. I think it is fine. On long drive (5 hours +) my knee can get sore, from the angle I use it to hold down the acclerator.

My son has an RX8 R3, an '09 model. He's never had a complaint about DD'ing it. I've had cars, from barely buckets (C5 Corvette) all the way to purpose built buckets and DD those as well. Sometimes sliding onto a mid-70's bench seat out of a Caddy would be easier, sure, but I've never regretted the buckets.

As Nike would say, Just do it.

If the seat actually fits you, then DDing a bucket is actually a very comfy experience that is completely worth the trade offs that come with a single piece bucket.. On the other hand, if the seat is too narrow you will absolutely hate it and between it pinching your hips and there being no graceful method of ingress/egress the experience will grow old very quickly. I would suggest retaining the regular seatbelt for DD duty however. As others have said, 4+ pt harnesses are clunky and a pain to put on and take off, and they hold you firmly to the seat (if they don't they won't do you any good in a wreck), whereas the standard 3pt will still allow you to move when you wish to. This is all from having driven multiple cars with single piece buckets and DDing one for a year and a half.

I have a 30 inch waist so fit basically can't be a problem. And I'd certainly run the seat with a stock seatbelt. The only thing I'm really worried about comfort the butt and back and such. Shoulders too—I have an issue with one of mine that causes discomfort in some seating situations.

Same here: 5'9", 130 lbs, 30 inch waist (too lazy to translate that to Swedish). There's no bucket seat I can't fit into, I'm just worried about comfort more in terms of padding. Some folks say they're hard on your back.

I had sparco buckets in my old e36 m3. It wasn't bad, and I was wide for them even, I got used to it quickly.

I will say getting your wallet out to pay a toll or fast food is a pain in the ass, and getting out for those not familiar with the car was difficult for some. Also, new passengers tend to flop down on them, and whine about how slamming their ass into a bucket seat hurt.

Oppo before noon is like drinking before noon.

It sounds like most of your hardships came from the harness. I'd be running the stock seatbelt so problem solved. I'm also a 30" waist sort of guy so a bucket would probably feel less confining. You didn't observe any back or ass pains? That's mostly what I'm concerned about.

I'm a skinny dude, so I'll fit for sure.

That's good to hear. Yeah, comfort varies person to person I guess. I know I won't feel squished in a bucket, just pondering about butt and back pain.

It really depends on the seat, and I was including butt and shoulders in the fitment of the seat. Yes the way it fits your hips is important too, but if it hits the other stuff wrong it can be just as uncomfortable as the seat being too narrow for your waist. I suggest doing this: use the seat to watch tv in or something for a week or so if you already have it. If it's uncomfortable to sit in for an hour or 2 then it won't be a good one to use in your DD. I was able to use mine for a 5 hour long gaming session and was still perfectly comfortable afterwards so I had no qualms about putting it in my DD.

Haha, I don't mind the prospect of having to contort to get in and out. And I empty my pockets when I drive, so there's that.

What kind of discomfort did you experience with buckets?

I've heard of those locks and if this seat deal falls through, I'm looking straight at those.

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, I don't have it in my hands. The seat I'm looking at does however have mounting hardware already for my exact car, so I was thinking... how bad would it be to drive over to the seller, pop out my old seat, pop in the new one, and give it a quick whirl before pulling the trigger? That's the best I could do to gauge comfort, as well as confirm that the seat isn't off-center or otherwise problematic.

Doubt that you could do that, but definitely ask to sit in it first. Depending on how much they are asking for it, you could always buy it, use it for a couple days at home, and then if you don't like it sell it to someone else.

There's no way I buy without sitting in it. But yeah, it's a pretty good price so I don't think reselling would be much of a loss.

I would also say dont do a 4 point harness. My car had a 4 point harness when I bought it, I eventually swapped it out, because it just led to noone (including me) using their seatbelt. I currently rock standard 3 pointers, which are a lot better. 3 point seatbelts are relatively easy to find, I paid for the parts (I forget what I paid) and then paid about $100 for installation. I don`t know if it matters to you or not, (or maybe you are a girl) but girls HATE harnesses. They have told me the harness sits right on their chest and is very uncomfortable.

I'd be using my factory 3-pt harness. And I'm male. :D

Mostly just the pain of having to climb in and out. I don't have a bad back but I expect that it could cause those who do to have some issues. I also have a concealed carry permit and it was very uncomfortable to sit in the seats while carrying on my hip.
