I guess $1,799 was too high an asking price.

It's like...love me!
You need to cruise salvage yards and pick you up an older jag that needs some love.

Craigslist is also a god source for a old Jag.

Similarly, $1,999 was too much for this one. :(

A sad fate for an underrated S-Type.

I wonder how many salvage yards troll used car dealers for inventory. 'Cause you know they're making 10 times that on the parts.
I looked at a 2001 2-door red 2.5RS that was hit light in the right front, but was 100% complete. They bought the thing for $660 at auction, and were asking $1100 for the engine, $900 for the trans..... yeah.
The STi pinks on 8-way adjustable KYB's, Borla UEL header, high flow cat, and other misc. items came home with me and a friend though. Think we paid for almost $400 of the car's worth to them.

I don't get that. It seems like there's nothing between ~$1500 and junk in the US. Are there no $1000 or $750 cars in the US? How come cars depreciate from $2000 to junk in one step? Where I live I could buy a beater for €500, or a slightly better car for €750 or an even better beater for €1000. At a business. You can buy a poor but running car for less privately, although you wouldn't be able to get that past the yearly inspection without significant costs.
Just to name an example, last year I bought a '98 Subaru Legacy wagon for €500 for a rally (Carbagerun, car couldn't cost more than €500). It had only one month of inspection left, the starter motor was unreliable and the distribution had to be changed a few dozen k kilometers earlier. After this work was done it took us over the Alps reliably and comfortably.

Goodbye S-Type.
I remember the first time I saw her, it's beautiful. Yes the grill is kinda ugly but I can forget that.
The want was strong back there..

I think it has to do with a lot of people being afraid of buying a lemon, or a car with poorly repaired crash damage, or especially with the higher end brands, where everything just explodes then costs a small fortune to fix. There's also a good chunk of people who don't even know what a starter motor is, and thus don't want to pay the garage bills for a cheapo car. Or, like this Jag, replacement parts would just cost too darn much for a $2000 car.
Usually, the cheap domestic cars seem to hang around because they're more common. For every 2000 Chevy Malibu on the road there's probably 15 at the local pull apart Junkyard. Same thing with commercial vehicles, there's a bazillion contractors and Lawn Service guys riding around in beat up Pickups and Vans with 200k on the clock.
