Time for a new laptop

I've got my laptop rendering an 18 minute stage video comprised of 9 video layers. Render time is 40 hours, during which I can't use my computer for anything else. That and less than 5 GB free hard drive space tells me it's time to put ol' Bessie out to pasture and get a new companion. Now I just need to rob a couple liquor stores to raise the funds…

Build your own. Much cheaper. Plenty of instructions online to make a powerhouse.

Check out http://www.xoticpc.com/ can customize a lot of options to fit what you need. Get an Intel Haswell CPU if possible. Before going for Ivy Bridge

and if you are doing rendering, probably shouldn't go with a laptop. Get a desktop. POWAHHHHHH!!!!!

The cool factor: http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems…

Probably a good idea: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/…

Obviously, I dream a lot too. And have no money.

Likewise I have seen the new ASUS models running I7s with serious graphics cards, having done some 3d modelling on one (CREO) and it had not issues I would expect they can handle the video editing as well.

Looks like they will set you back about$1400 or so though.

I need to be able to work from the road, desktops don't fit in my carry-on very well

Is there a reason you can't just use a cloud-rendering service? You can buy a lot of minutes on a render farm for the price of a high-powered laptop.

I do a lot of my work on the move. Sometimes that means being in a motel in the middle of nowhere with no internet (or internet that's just too slow to be practical), other times it means editing and rendering from the cab of the diesel while on a 3-day tow.
And like I said, my hard drive's pretty much crammed (even with all my video footage and most non-essential files on external drives), so I need to expand anyways. I've had this laptop for five years. It's lead a good life.

I know they are still pricey for the larger drives, but do yourself a favour and get a solid state drive. They really do make everything feel a heck of a lot snappier.

I'm running on an Asus G75VW that I got refurbished from Newegg a month or so back. The thing's a beast (9.5lbs and pretty thick) so it might not be great for carrying around.

Get an i7 laptop and a tablet so you can surf during renders. Or just use your old laptop to surf, that's not as portable but it is cheaper.
