Saw someone doing 80mph on a spare tire today. I do not approve. Especially considering that yesterday I had to dodge someone's tire shreds all over the highway.

Asshats. Do the words "For temporary use only" not mean anything to them?! Dodging car parts on the highway is just a daily ritual for me.

This is a major issue in Florida... I never thought about it until i actually had to use my spare a couple years ago... figured I would read what was on it... speed rating at max 35mph. wtf. 4 brand new tires were purchased the next day just so I didn't have to deal with that 35mph on the freeway (it would have been fine but would rather be safe for my sake and others). Now i notice all these little donuts driving around going 70+... get away from me!

yeah, I've pushed on to 55mph once, but that was for 10 minutes and I got a new tire the next day. I've known people to go 5 months+ on a spare! Suicidal!

Yeah, they're pretty much made to help you limp to the garage to buy a real tire.

haha no! It's funny how close to the limit some people feel they need to push these... funny until their car hits my car.

Terrible. Ladders, tool boxes, pet carriers (thankfully with no pets in them), tires, you name it, it's there. Just yesterday on my way home from work, traffic slowed to about 45 MPH. I, of course, assume there's a wreck ahead, but nope! Just a cardbox of pillows that someone had hit. *Sigh*

I've seen bald spares before, just crazy.

They're pretty heavily overbuilt. Car and driver once tested spares extensively, and found they were actually quite durable. The original article isn't on the web but it is referred to later here

For a long time I really wanted a 240d Mercedes with a 4 speed manual and 4 space saver spares.

I agree that's terrible. Last fall I had to ride on a spare for 5 days because the tire place didn't have my tire and couldn't get it from anywhere nearby.

Those were 5 of the scariest days ever! It felt like it rained every day! (If you don't know why that's scary, you obviously haven't had the luck I have) also, it seemed like every single person wanted to jump out in front of me and slam on their brakes. This caused a lot of heartache because it made a terribly unbalanced sliding stop every time. Not to mention it gave my ABS and brake pads a terrible time!

Never again!

Haha....It's Highway 99 in Central California. Runs from just north of the mountains north of L.A. all the way to Sacramento.
