Why oh why oh why.

My car had some type of wierd rattle so I took it into the mechanic. During the test drive to hear said rattle for themselves, it died. Apparently it just started going slower and slower. Normally I wouldnt worry too much, but I move on Saturday.

Dòh!!

Worst case: oil pump failure, lolengine

Best case: something fuel related. Maybe.

Usually rattles that make engines slow up and die are not a good thing. I hope it turns out okay for ya though.

What kind of car?

The driver of the car when it died (a mechanic) says it may be the fuel pump. It certainly didnt run out of fuel, I filled it yesterday.

I called the shop. It lives!! Don;t know what was wrong yet, but I was told to haul my ass down there at the end of the day.

Update: It lives!! Will update when I get the bill, but apparently it is alive. The rattle was caused by the exhaust, this is not totally surprising to me, as it was on its last legs. Many rusts, and many broken hangers in the exhaust.

Excellent. "weird rattle" is never good. Weird rattle investigation led me once to replace a timing chain just because I couldn't risk it being *that*. So, of course, in the process I discovered a loosening harmonic balancer bolt - fun!

The VW I used to have nearly drove me out of my head several times with "weird rattle" related to the AC compressor. Note, though, that neither this nor the previous was "weird rattle + engine stop".

I think they were unrelated. How could a lose exhaust stop the engine? The shop sounded anxious to get off the phone, so I didnt ask what the engine stop was caused by, but we shall find out and update. Possibly with Sr 20.

Update, I can`t SR20 the bill from here, but basically the loose rattle was my exhaust pipe falling off (although I had rehung the muffler) and the engine failure was caused by the fuel pump stopping.

So the bill approximately looked like: Labour 0.5 Hours, weld new pipe to exhaust. ($49) Materials: 1.0 Welding gas ($9) 1 clamp ($2,85) 2.5 feet straight pipe ($8.15)

Engine stalled, won`t restart, pressure check fuel system. No pressure. Remove gas tank and replace fuel pump. Labour: 2.0 Hours ($196) Materials: Fuel Pump ($249.83) plus taxes (14%). This was supposed to come out to 593, but using the prices from my memory it only comes out to 586. Plus I owe one of the mechanics $75, because he paid for the towing himself. Oh well.
