Here's an up-to-date graphic on current maximum speed limits in the US.

Illinois just increased to 70 mph yesterday. A bill is being proposed to bring Wisconsin to 70 mph. NJ lawmaker wants 75 mph on the Turnpike and Parkway. A Michigan senator is considering increasing their speed limit as well, possibly to 75 mph. On the other hand, a Nevada 85 mph bill and North Carolina 75 mph bill got shot down this past year. We shall see if the 65 mph states increase to 70 mph to be more continuous with the rest of the country... How is your state speed limit? Should it be increased?

P.S. - Not sure if I'm allowed to do this, but if you want to keep up-to-date on Interstate speed limit increases across the country and see information supporting higher, more reasonable speed limits, check out this awesome page:

there are some spots in michigan where 75 or 80 wouldn't be an issue, nothing around and no traffic.

Increase it to the actually traffic speed 85% rule. Montana should re-repeal their speed limits.

Current is 75 here in Colorado yes, but I'll be damned if people don't do 90 most of the time. I wouldn't be surprised to see an 80mph speed limit in Colorado in a few years.

Oh and part of me wants to say Michigan should be 75, the other part knows how it works in hunting season. Wind up with trucks lined off the shoulder of the major highways.

straight from an article on increasing Michigan's speed limit:

“The state police advised me that many of our highways can probably go to 75 and maybe a few to 80,” said Senator Jones.

I don't think it matters as everyone here (Illinois FWIW) does 10-15 over the limit anyway. Increasing it would just give them a reason to go faster.

With the current state of car technology and the way its progressing, I would assume it will just be steadily raised, but my problem with that is most people should not be driving anywhere near that fast. I only say this because of the lack of attention on the roads. If everyone paid complete attention to driving, we could all go 90 mph. The sad fact is that you don't want anyone travelling even at current speed limits with all of the superfluous stuff they're doing behind the wheel.

The bill lowered the reckless driving threshold from 31 mph to 26 mph over the limit. Either our prisons will overflow due to the 55 mph limits or people will not excessively speed.

Also, much data shows that average travel speeds BARELY change when the speed limit is changed.

69 is pretty good (I think especially for BC cause those aren`t proper freeways. For Ontario 62 is a joke. Go 62 on the 401, or 417, see what happens, you`ll be being passed by 18 wheelers, and cars on left and right.

Oregon has voted several times to increase the speed limit. Even with massive public support and easily passing, the Governor vetoed it once, and it was simply ignored a few other times. It's absurd.

If these speeds worked for cars in the 70s and 80s, then they should be adjusted for modern vehicles performance and safety improvements.

65 here in Oregon.

I don't think it matters much whether the limit is raised or not. People will continue to drive at the pace that they deem necessary and safe (whether that's the case or not).

Me? I'll probably continue to drive between 65 & 70 no matter what.

Kinja'd!!! Casper > Blondude

Kinja'd!!!6

That is because people will generally follow a logical process of determination. Chances are, that's a sign the general speed limit is too low. People will generally drive at a safe speed on average with outliers in the extremes.

For most freeways, 80MPH is the upper limit most people will travel, and is a reasonably safe speed for most traffic types (excluding those with mechanical limitations).

AND FYI most of the speed limits on the intrastate-interstate are 50-55 MPH. although they've been lowering it to 40-45 in a bunch of places since they're making the lanes narrower.

Here in AZ there is basically an unwritten rule that you don't get pulled over on the highway until you are going more than 10 over, and most the time, traffic is flowing on the highway (in 75mph zones) right around 85mph. I have driven past many speed traps going 85 and the cops don't so much as blink.

In my mind, I think it would make the most sense to go ahead and raise the speed limit to 85 to match reality, and then actually enforce that as the limit. The roads are the safest when everyone is going the same speed, so it doesn't make sense to me to have a system that naturally creates drivers going two different speeds (one group going the speed limit, and one going 10 over).

I wasn't often passed by cars going 90. I'm always getting passed on the PA turnpike though and I'm doing about 10 over the limit.

With the power of the average commuter car, 75 is fine. You don't find yourself wishing you could cruise at a higher speed. At least that is my observation about myself and the majority of the cars around me.

The 85mph speed limit is for "roads specifically constructed for that speed", and right now SH130, which is a toll road that runs between just north of Austin to I-10 east of San Antonio, is the only one that meets that qualification. However, the speed limits in central and west Texas on regular interstates is 80mph. Even our little, narrow two-lane 'Farm to Market' roads have speed limits of 70mph.

Yeah, right outside of Austin. I mean, it's a public road that requires a toll, but it's not like a private road that wouldn't count.

There is a loooooooooooonnnnnnnng stretch of I-10 between Austin and El Paso that is marked as 80 nearly the entire way, and it's not a toll road.

In most of Washington, especially the east side with flat open desert, 75 or 80 would do just fine. I knew a girl in College that was from California that was given a ticket for speeding here in WA. Her defense? She was "only going 15 over". That's the only trouble with 65 and 70 here in OR and WA, the state patrol will nail you for doing 6 over. I'm a little jealous of states that seem to get by with doing 10 over and no one cares. The only time that happens is entering Seattle in tightly packed traffic where everyone is doing 75 in a 60, but that shit is scary.

I'd just like the speed limits on secondary roads and similar to be looked at. 25-35 mph might have made sense when these speed limits were enacted, and cars were gigantic land yachts that took 300 feet to stop and handled like a whale, but they don't really make sense today, with ESC, antilock brakes, new rubber compounds, etc. Even the most bloated SUVs of today accelerate/stop and handle better than many sports cars of 30, 40, 50 years ago.

There is definitely one expressway in Canada that could use a sizeable bump. Its in the greater Toronto area, GTA for short and its called the express toll route or 407. We already pay about 30 cents a mile to drive on it. So it is ridiculous to hold vehicles to 62 mph. Truth be told, I usually run 70-75mph on it with no issue. Meaning I drive straight past speed traps with no lift or retardedly dangerous panic brake event and they don't budge. Still, there's hardly traffic on it and its has between 4-5 lanes each direction at any given point. Bumping it up to 75mph and having ppl go 85-90 on it would still be totally safe IMO. It would actually help those left and center lane road hogs get the hell over and stop being lazy. You know those ppl that want to avoid merging traffic so they never travel in the right lane but travel slower than the semi 's that are passing them on the right....

When I first got my Driver's License, I lived in Montana and there was no fixed speed limit! Overall I felt it was great, and I really miss it. It was interesting to see how fast/slow people actually drove without a number on a sign, and generally there were many positives. Following distance increased and signal and seat-belt usage also both went up. Best case scenario is probably digital signs that can update the max/min speeds for a stretch of road per traffic density, lighting/visibility, and weather.

Completely agree - with the exception of inclement weather, I-95 is wide and flat through most of the state with visibility for miles...

Of course the friggin' snowbirds won't know how to handle it though...

It's complicated, but basically no. The problem is that Oregon is generally Democrat controlled state for all of recent history. The problem created is that if the Governor decides to veto something, it's like the king of the party making a decision. Pretty much none of the party members would break formation to challenge him. Further, if the politicians don't want to be the bad guy, their favorite fall back option is to have DOT simply refuse to do it based on cost or some other excuse, then just not force them to comply or punish them for non-compliance (because they actually didn't want them to comply).

While I understand your point, I don't think mine is completely irrelevant. For instance, I know and have seen many people that have no problem simultaneously talking on the phone, holding a cup of coffee and doing their eye makeup or shaving while looking in the visor mirror, but they never speed because they are so worried about getting a ticket.

Would you really want them driving faster than they already are? My point is that people are more distracted now than they ever have been, and letting them drive faster isn't always the best idea. The point is to improve safety and lower the number of accidents and deaths on the road, not maintain the numbers we have.

However, it is a great idea to raise the limit in WI, because 65 mph suuuucks on I-94.

So Oregon is listed as 65, and yes, there are spots that have the speed limit as high as 65, but for the most part, at least on the West side of Portland, even I5 is 55mph. It's ridiculous! You can raise the official maximum all you want, but if you don't change the signs, what does it matter?

Loved the Utah highway system when I lived there. Everyone, including cops, would speed in the left hand lane. Slower drivers, of course, would be to the right.

The speed was around 70-75 in the right hand lane, and 80-90 in the left. Never once had I seen a cop pull someone over in the left hand lane for going 10mph over... in fact, I watched a cop follow a line of traffic, and I jumped in behind him.

Now I'm back in Idaho, and I swear people can't be bothered to use more than an inch of their accelerator... =/ I would love to see an article / review on states driving conditions. Idaho doesn't have "bad" drivers, just really really obnoxiously slow ones. Haha

As a Wisconsin property tax payer, I can tell you that Wisconsin property taxes are quite low compared to Illinois taxes.

I do think Wisconsin is very backwards with speed limits and very aggressive about ticketing though. Ticket revenue is big business here. People get pulled over A LOT here.

No one really drives 65 for any extended period of time on rural highway here though. Most people drive 70-75. There are always a few idiots doing 85 or 90.

Louisiana laughs at speed limits. I-10 south of Baton Rouge is regularly 90+ during commuting hours.

Also, max speed of 65? damn that sucks...

Go yellow team! Of course... you do have to go far out of your way to get to a posted 80 mph zone.

Well 55mph is way to slow for a tri-state tollway when you're away from the city. The tollway to/from the suburbs should have a much faster limit.

The bill lowered the reckless driving threshold from 31 mph to 26 mph over the limit.

287 would be a good one to raise it on. There are portions where 80 is too slow for the flow.

I was just going to whine about Oregon. I spent several days there last week, and saw 55 on so many highways, both urban and rural. It was like going back in time to 1975. Idiotic.

Now, where's the diagram showing what speeds people actually drive? We have a 65 mph speed limit in NJ and if you drive that speed, you're a road hazard.

Also I-10 between Houston and San Antonio. Actually you know what: you're wrong, I-10 doesn't pass through Austin. So I guess that means Houston to El Paso.
