It is certainly dependent on how well maintained it was.

I don't know a ton about them but from what I know they're one of the more reliable AMG's. I'd say if you can find a well maintained one hop on it.

Can't speak for the C32, but I've owned a AMG W124 and a Brabus W124, and no problems with neither ones..

I don't think they are unreliable, per se. The real issue is how expensive they are to fix when something does go wrong. Unless you plan on having several thousand set aside as a repair reserve, the first major issue you have with it will probably force you to either go into substantial debt or walk away from the car.

It would be extremely fun... until it breaks.

It's like what Mr. Weatherman says, it's definitely no Honda, but it's probably not a Range Rover either. Something is bound to go wrong, simply because this car was designed for people with enough disposable income to shrug off a few costly repair bills. In terms of AMG cars this would probably be one of the better ones to buy, but ultimately, it is just going to be a money pit that you will be forced to abandon after a couple years max. That's just my opinion though, based off friends experiences with the cars.

The late 90s to early 2000s era was probably the lowest point as far as Mercedes reliability and build quality goes, so try to target as late of a model as possible (2004). Also, the early models are getting old enough that expensive, preventative maintenance is likely starting to be skipped, so finding a car with a maintenance record is worth paying extra for. AMG hand builds their motors, so if not abused, they are likely more reliable than the non-AMG motors. However, due to the extra power, they tend to be abused. Also, be ready to buy a factory shop manual if you intend to maintain the vehicle yourself, as there are few "do it yourself"-ers posting how-tos on the internet when it comes to repairs and maintenance.
