So, apparently the Canadian military has been spending some cash on developing a stealth snowmobile for Arctic operations. Sometimes, I like to think Canada isn't the stereotype that everyone thinks it is, but then things like this happen...

I wonder how they'll solve the issue of it making very noticeable tracks in the snow everywhere it goes.

Maybe it has something like a fan to blow the snow back into place?

That sounds like a very fuel-inefficient, noisy and maintenance-heavy solution.

It might work though, although I reckon it would just leave a different kind of mark instead.

They could possibly drag huge brushes behind it.

But I am by no means an engineer, so don't listen to what I say.

maybe it is intended to sneak up on the enemy, not sneak away ?

Yeah but there's something known as satellite surveillance as well as something known as a UAV. In a vast, open place like Canada's arctic regions, those two are bound to be used by either side of a potential conflict in order to get live intel (not to mention the fact that a fast-moving cloud of snow is quite easy to spot using just a pair of human eyes). It might sound like the tracks are just useful for hunting the snowmobile, but that's not all it can be used for. Knowing your enemy's movement patterns is pretty useful.

Maybe part of the money is going to unmanned vehicles that'll drive off in random directions during an attack?

That also sounds like a very expensive solution.

I was thinking more along the lines of a tactical strike, night time , special ops kinda deal.

They'd have to be very, very quick about it then, and from the sound of the article in the OP it sounded more like it's going to be used for defensive/surveillance purposes in the Arctic, which implies longer deployments.

Replace "unmanned snowmobiles" with "Roombas on treads". Bam. Millions of dollars saved.

It could work, if the terrain is perfectly flat.

you're probably right , I was just venturing a guess.

Plus, it would clean up the Arctic. Everyone wins.
