So I know that we've got a Reader's Rides spreadsheet going, a wallpaper collection, a list of DMV Jalops, and maybe one or two other things where most of us have pitched in... but how about a collection of some good roads in our areas where we can really wind out our cars or just cruise?

I'm in the Baltimore/D.C. area and spend most of my time behind the wheel commuting through places where there aren't any decent roads with sparse traffic nearby, and the closest tracks that I know of (aside from auto-x events) are Virginia International Raceway (4.5 hours away) and Maryland International Raceway (a dragstrip that's 1.5 hours away). I've often wondered if there any backroads and such that are closer to home and that are at least worth cruising, and I imagine that there are other Opponauts here who'd love to know about any routes that others in their area could share.

I doubt I could create a Google Doc that'd be organized enough, but we could start by posting some Google Maps routes. I found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in a NASIOC thread.

I like this idea. I know there aren't many good roads here in the midwest, but I'd be happy to travel a bit to get to one if I knew where one was.

Really? I was under the impression that there's a lot more space out West.

Oh, we have space, and we have plenty of roads. Problem is, because everything is so far between, they just cut through the occasional hill and made the roads straight.

In other words, it's really boring.

Ah, I see. I figured that might be the case.

I'm on board with this. There are some good roads in Catlett south of gainesville. I'll try to map it out.

Can we define what we are looking for? They we could set out locally armed with a GPS and find some good roads.

There's an app called Greatest Drives that lets you share and look up twisty bits of tarmac.

Yes. Alps.

There really aren't that many great driving rounds where I live. It's completely flat here. Yes, I could reach the unlimited German Autobahn in half an hour, but driving fast in a straight line is boring and overrated. So: Alps . They really are amazing and I'd advice everyone to go. Take more time than my 3 days though.

What I have in mind is winding/open roads that are well-paved, have low traffic, and that are generally great to at least cruise on with your car. They don't necessarily have to be the stuff of legend (i.e. Mulholland Drive), but we want to get any great roads that somehow escape the congestion and neglect that's characteristic of population-dense areas, as well as roads that stand out in locales where most of the open roads aren't entertaining to drive.

Basically, if you know a good road that you like to drive, then you're totally welcome to set up some sort of indicator of where it is (i.e. a custom route on Google Maps). Of course, I don't have a way to effectively organize it all, but I'm hoping that someone who can set up a table/spreadsheet for any and all suggestions steps forward.

Didn't know that. Is it iOS-only, or are there Android and WP versions as well?

I am thinking of roads that connect together to form a loop. Or a long stretch of road that when you get to the end there isnt a question of should I turn around and do that again. You are already turning the car around when you get to the end. I'll see what I can come up with.

Also I live in a highly congested area so none of this will be local to me. I hate when people complain about how far something is. The drive will be worth it. Sometimes the drive there is even cool.

Thanks! The store is really picky when it comes to the search function, but I got it now.

I've just been working with Google Maps API V3 for a project. Maybe we could create a website with a list and all of the roads in an interactive map.

I'll look into it.

But don't count on me fully making it.

It's quite a bit of work that I don't have time for.

I know that a full site would be a lot of work and that you don't have the time to throw one together at the drop of a hat, so I'm not expecting that. But I'd still like to see what you can put together if you decide to try, whatever the result.
