Choose your car and mods to maximize fun and economy

You live and work in a city with tight parking. You commute alone and have other cars for your hauling needs. You are to build a daily driver that you can drive into the city and park. It will get good mpg and has a manual. It will be front wheel drive and have only 2 doors plus the hatch in the rear. You can pick any brand you like and have an unlimited budget.

Ready GO!

Unfortunately your rules seem to ban a Smart with a Hayabusa motor. I has a sad.

Kinja'd!!!

Two doors: check. Front engine and front-wheel drive: Check. Hatch: check. Can I park it: with a little bit of a tight squeeze, check. Mods: oh hell yes!

Do I win?

EDIT: I realize I skimped over the "good fuel economy" rule. Well, it's a hybrid, so it has to get good fuel economy, right?

Limiting it to FWD. That pretty much eliminates most cool vehicles of any kind. If you had an unlimited budget, you wouldn't play this game.

Spoon Civic Type R, done. Reliable? It's a Honda, the good one. Sporty? Type R and/or Spoon usually means EXTREMELY sporty. Fuel economy? It's a Honda Civic with a manual, it sips gas as-is. Fun? The best.

2010 Mini Cooper S Hardtop with the following mods:

Alta AP with custom tune (Cobb is 4hrs away from me so a dyno tune would be an easy thing to get done)

Akrapovic 3" catted DP

Invidia Q300 2.5" cat back exhaust

Helix stepped core FMIC

Hybrid Billet 56 Turbo

Alta hard pipes

Upgraded internals to handle the extra boost without the engine going boom

Duel AG Carbon fiber hood painted to match the body

JCW bumpers and side skirts

GP rear diffuser and under panels

M7 splitter

GP rear wing

Enkei RPf-1 wheels in 16"x7" outfitted with 205/50 Dunlop Direzza ZII's

Ohlins coil overs

H-Sport 25.5mm hollow rear sway bar

Eibach camber plates

Helix rear adjustable control arms

Helix short shift adaptor and the revides ABS cover plate that Goes with it

This is assuming an unlimited mod budget, if the unlimited budget only applies to the purchase of the car it self then either a Mini GP or a Focus ST. Oh, and the 2010 was specified because the engine management changed after that year and flash tuning the ecu was no longer an option.

A more reasonable build (read the one I actually DD, except for the FMIC and BPV which will be coming next year) starting from the same base would go like this:

Defenders of Speed CAI

Alta AP

Exhaust resonator delete

Koni FSD shocks

Helix short shift adaptor

Helix stepped core FMIC

upgraded BPV

I know it's not technically N/A anymore after mods, but the 2.5L is a strong block, even if you don't turbo it, you can get it up to the (turbo'd) GTI numbers with stage 1 or 2 tune. I forget which one, but still. A solid car, the 08.5 and 09's have 170HP w/ 177 ft-lbs torque, stock. Before turboing, I'm sure you could probably get 225-250 HP out of it without serious internal modifications

Kinja'd!!!1

Oh yea for sure. You can get a lil over 200hp with a few breathing mods. Some one makes a beautiful intake for it then sell a tune to that will get you there. Then it just needs an exhaust so that wonderful 5 pot note comes out. A low pressure trubo system will get you to 250hp no problem. I just like how the n/a 2.5 sounds.

That's what you have right? I tried to buy one and got denihilated by the bank because I was too young.

Kinja'd!!! CKeffer > ZeroOrDie - Powered By MZR
08/15/2013 at 14:18

Kinja'd!!!0

Ok, since my other suggestion is not valid due to boost, can we count the classic mini? It technically has a trunk rather than a hatch, but it follows the proper shape.

If so, then a classic Mini from the mad men at Mini Tec. They start with the classic chassis then rip out the old motor and replace it with the one from the Honda Civic Type R, and all the peripherals to make it work correctly and reliably, then add in new brakes, suspension & a wheel and tire package to make it corner and stop like it should and you wind up with a sub 2000lb 200hp rocket that is ludicrous amounts of fun.

I'm baaaaack!!!

Who needs a hatch anyway - especially when you said you had another vehicle for hauling.

This is mine - 332whp 364wtq @24psi *stock turbo, o/r dp, ic* - SAAB 5sp w/ short throw and quaife LSD (stock) - stock FE5 suspension w/ Powell xXx rear swaybar

It shoots flames, hauls ass, handles very well and returns 31-33 mpg highway when the stock tune is on (switchable via traction control or cruise control).

People keep trying to buy it... I just cant bring myself to sell. Once the ATS 2.0t finds more aftermarket support and they start making the 400-450 whp the stock motor is capable of I'll be rollin in one of those!

Very nice. Yea a little early on the ATS aftermarket. I agree sit back and wait for tuners to get a hold of it.

http://shop.zzperformance.com/store/p/1094-Z…

This already exists for the cobalt, which shares the same motor as the ATS. Direct bolt on, same spool as stock and 550whp potential on E85.

I want to know why this hasn't been slapped on an ATS yet... I feel like it's chassis would be much more suited to handling this power. Plus a 6 speed and rwd in a nice, right-sized Cadillac. Holy shit I'll be in love.

Pump gas tune, in a cobalt:

Going with the cool wall rules in article 15 section 8: FWD cars can be cool in cases where they are modified beyond their stock configuration.
