When you're smaller than an Outback wagon?

The Impreza wagon has 97 cubic feet of int. space and the X1 has 98. Go figure.

Going with the obvious answer of because C.A.F.E. and the differences between cars and "trucks."

If this was a wagon sitting at a normal car height, I'd be all for it. It's got the right proportions for it. Here's the back.

the real question is why is an outback still considered a wagon...they are HUGE!

Thats why the don't advertise it as an SUV, CUV, or wagon. It's a SAV- Sports Activity Vehicle

Ironically, parked right next to the X1 was an Outback. That's what sparked the question. I should've taken a side-by-side.

It was my first time seeing one tonight. I think I saw one at the auto show, but I have a tendency to stroll right past BMW in fear of falling asleep standing up.

Sadly its the same logic that you can buy a CX-5, which makes Mazda look like geniuses under CAFE but can't buy a Mazda6 wagon.

Exactamundo!
CAFE regulations dictate those classifications, and it is almost all about ride height.
It is much more likely to cost less money to offer a tall variant of a car, than a low one, because passenger cars are treated more strictly.
Which is ironic, because raising the car up hurts fuel efficiency.
But it helps not get damaged by the roads that the government isn't fixing with our high priced gas taxes.
The law of unintended consequences. The great un-written law codified in every bill the Congress writes and the POTUS signs.

One of my coworkers drives a new outback I'll try and get a picture of it parked next to my jetta wagen this week.
