Kinja'd!!!

Let's share some of the stupidest things regarding cars you've ever heard from people you know.

Let me start:

- A female friend I was helping once wanted me to back her car into a narrow gate. She's a bit of a crappy driver so I agreed to do it. I get in, pop the car into reverse and when look in the mirrors (I always back up looking in the mirrors, not the rear windshield) I notice that they're basically pointing into outer space. After successfully backing up, I ask the friend about her mirrors and she said that she never uses them anyway. She claimed that her driving instructor taught her to disragard mirrors and just look over the shoulder. Needless to say, I've not let her drive me anywhere since then.

- A friend of a friend heard the blow-off sound on an Evo doing a fly-by and thought it was an air brake. What's more, he's an utter automotive moron. He has no problem with using tyres that are 10+ years old, or having 4 different ones on his car. He won't ever check his engine oil because "that's what the annual inspection is for". Finally, when his handbrake packed up, he refused to just start leaving the car in gear "because if that wasn't harmful, automakers wouldn't put hadbrakes in cars". Until he got it fixed, he'd leave the car with stones under the wheels.

- A person I know kept claiming that he can destroy M3s in his Prius and ZJ Grand Cherokee, because they have automatic transmissions and those make cars faster. He wouldn't listen to any arguments and said that any attempt to quickly drive a "standard" car would just burn out the clutch.

- I've met a person who was bewildered by the fact that I can take my feet off the pedals (in a manual car) while driving and the vehicle won't stall. Any attempts to explain how it worked proved futile. What's even more scary is that this person is now an amateur automotive journalist. Yup, he's one of the people whose reviews you read because deciding on a purchase.

- People saying that AWD helps with braking are standard fare.

Talking about exhausts and "needing backpressure" anything regarding turbos or cams.. boost pressure is another fun one. Really anything more complicated than air-filters to be honest. Even there, the concept of pressure drop as a function of surface area vs. engine demand flow seems to be out of reach no matter how many times we have the conversation.

Long story short they like to bench race, talk about parts they don't understand, throw around HP figures added or removed willy-nilly and stop just short of thinking racing stripes and stickers make you faster.

"needing backpressure" is especially dumb on a turbo car... You can lose power pretty quickly going with too big of an exhaust on an N/A car, which is where the "needing backpressure" crap came from, I guess.

Talking to people at car meets and realizing they are spitting out stuff they heard from a car reviewer. They got some facts right here and there but mostly blowing steam.

You're a car guy right? Turns into hey I've got this problem can you take a look at it. No I am a gear head with a passion for racing who understands all the basic concepts of how things work but I know nothing about your car in particular. I am a gear head not a mechanic.

Explaining how turbo diesel engines work to a subaru guy. Thought he was on board until he started talking about what he knew about diesels. Which was clearly 1980s knowledge based.

The smartest girl in my school had trouble answering what kind of car she drove and what engine it had in it. I feel like some basic knowledge is important if you are going to rely on something everyday and if you need to take care of it. Unfortunately people often take this approach with kids and pets.

-My brother once use Oil as a Coolant because they have the same color. Really.

08/14/2013 at 13:06

Kinja'd!!!1

Exactly, and even then the backpressure is not the goal.. its exact velocity and pulse timing. The pressure you are looking for is actually the low pressure zone behind each pulse, and the idea is to time it (the low pressure side of the exhaust pulse) in such a manner that it helps "pull" the next one along.

This is of course only achieved over a specific rev range, and even then is a function of load/heat.

We've had that conversation too.

Kinja'd!!! CKeffer > LandSpeed-DSM
08/14/2013 at 13:14

Kinja'd!!!0

People always seem to confuse exhaust velocity with backpressure. You will most definitely lose power by going with an exhaust system that's too large for your engine, but that's not a function of backpressure, it's due to a loss of exhaust velocity....Explaining this to folks usually gets a blank look.

The mirrors thing is somewhat true to be honest. You should use them but it is common for instructors to say you should turn your head and look out of the windows because they want you to physically see the car/obstructions behind you or to the side of you. I think it was done just to drill into their head to look before you do anything.

Well you see you are thinking with the mentality of driving for a while. If you are experienced then you are fine and most likely won't cause an accident. The issue is with new drivers who commonly have a tunnel vision issue. New drivers rarely turn their head and that can lead to problems with being aware with their surroundings. This is a way to combat that mentality and that it is fine to move around a bit. After a while they will just use the mirrors but it is a great way to kind of subconsciously fix it.

Another guy at gas station: So how fast is it?

I've yet to think of an appropriately snarky response to this question which is so brain-numbingly obvious ("Um.. yes.") and yet so completely unanswerable ("Do you mean acceleration? Top speed? Compared to your car? In a straight line or around a track? As a daily driver? Compared to an actual racecar? What spec series?")

Lol, thankfully I was able to correct my uncle. I tied some twine around some big metal washers, and had him swing it around in a circle, then I added a bunch more, and asked him if he had to hold on tighter to keep the string and washers from flying off with more or fewer washers, then I told hem that tires were doing pretty much the same thing in a turn. Granted in reality it's not quite that simple, but the illustration got the point across.

I find the easiest way to explain it to people is to agree that yes, the tyres do get more frictional force, but, and here is the big but, under higher loads the tyres lose their efficiency, where an extra pound of weight may only give .8 or .9 lbs of traction. This is why a vehicle with fat tyres, and little mass can get more traction.

Yes you can put it in auto mode, but for alot of dct's, they wont upshift if they hit the rev limiter. A 'manual' suggests that you have the control of shifting the gears. If a dct won't upshift unless you tell it to, then it is a manual. It still engages/disengages the clutch(s) when you shift gears, it does not have a torque converter, and unless your in auto mode, it wont shift for you. I think that is another way to look at a manual.

To me a "manual" transmission implies as much control as possible is in the hands of the driver. I would classify DCTs as another form of auto. Can they for instance..

Select gears at will? (say go from 2nd to 5th)

Pop the clutch to allow burnouts, drifting, and other hooliganism?

I am quite aware that they are faster than manuals, and much better than slushbox autos. They do conceptually bore me because they take all the finesse out of shifting. If getting a perfectly rev matched downshift is as easy as pulling a lever it loses the quality that makes it a nearly spiritual experience with a true manual transmission.

To me it ends up being like playing a video game on easy or hard. In both cases you can win the game but playing on hard with all its frustrations and added BS is arguably the more rewarding experience.

I see where you are coming from.

But yes the new GT3 can "pop" the clutch if you pull both paddles at the same time, and yes you can shift multiple gears in some dct's if you hold the paddle you want to shift.

I am not saying that they should be called manuals, I am saying that they shouldnt be called autos, cause they are neither of them. It just gets annoying hearing "oh that ferrari sucks, it has an auto", when its actually so much more complex than that.

Unfortunately, yes. Half of them had genuinely never heard the word Ferrari before. The other half had absolutely no grasp of what a Ferrari was. They thought other cars were Ferraris and only after I proved them wrong did they confess they had no idea what a Ferrari really was. Here's the cars they confused for Ferraris: Corvette, Mustang, Elise (forgivable), and a Boxster. Honestly, I think they learned more about cars from me in two years than they learned about cars in the rest of their lives. I only know about two people who even sort of like cars.

Clearly they didn't know what a tachometer was, they just knew the word was related to a gauge in their car. If they knew what it was, they wouldn't have said it in response to "this gauge shows you how fast your car is going."

Naturally aspirated rotaries are perfectly reliable as long as you keep up on the maintenance!

My personal favorite by some girl who I am no longer in contact with:

"Why does my car do this weird thing when I press the gas, where it kind of stops speeding up for a second and then starts going again?"
"You mean, when it changes gears?"
"What's that?"

*facepalm*

Point is missed. Not only did the card reader think the tachometer shows vehicle speed, but so did the other 3 girls. So they won the point, but lost our respect.

The biker just wanted to help, and when he detected your sarcasm, he just knew whe wasn't wanted and just played along and left. (Probably) nothing stupid about that.

Went shopping with my wife - she was driving. Searching for a parking space at the mall. I see a car backing out and say " that guy's leaving - let's take that one". She says," how do you know?". I say, "see the back-up lights." She says, "what are back-up lights?" The other famous one was when we got a new car and she had to drive it at night alone for the first time. She couldn't remember how to dim the headlights and they were on hi-beam. Every on-coming car would flash to tell her to dim so she would !turn off the headlights! Finally THAT was too much trouble so she, yes, just turned them off and drove home with no lights . ..... I never let her drive when we go somewhere together.

Right. But how did they even know the word...tachometer? That's crazy. But definitely lost major points for thinking it's the SPEEDOMETER holy shit how do you fuck that up.
