A little time alternating between my drill with a wire wheel and my die grinder with a disc. I can see some shiny metal under there.

Kinja'd!!!

I'd like to drop the rear axle and remove as much as I can from the the frame, but I'm unsure how to support the truck. My jack stands won't reach all the way up to the frame.

Quick progress! I often put cinder blocks or bricks under my jack stands when they don't reach.

2 X 8's or similar. Worked for me.

You still need a 4" or 4 1/2" angle grinder.

You want to make one appear at my house I'll use it. If not you'll have to wait until I get around to buying one.

I'm not sure what you mean. Stack up some 2/8's until they reach or put my jackstands on them?

I've got some bricks around.

I just put them under the stands until I get the height needed.

no u

(I really wish I knew a way to force image size that would work on Kinja. The SA emoticons are amazing but lose impact blown up.)

(Not ragging you overmuch for not buying yet, just encouraging the eventuality.)

The nearest harbor freight is in the next state.

I think I'll get one of these

I got the $20 special from Harbor Freight and removed 99% of the paint from my Alfa with it. Replaced the brushes once. Also went through a box of wire wheels, which is the real expense. I did not expect it to last. Surprise, surprise! I still use it, and it still works great.

one of those material removal wheels might be nice too. You know the ones that look like a really course sponge coated in a black oxide type coating? Those things eat up rust like crazy.

Also as a side note, I'm a big fan of these sand paper discs for getting rust off. They work quick and don't shoot sharp pieces of wire at you every 5 minutes.

Cinder blocks and bricks are a *terrible* idea to support a car. They give no warning when they fail and fail explosively. Use wood or metal, but not masonry.

Either hunt up some free scrap lumber, or go to Home Depot and see what they have cheap in the cutoff bin near the wood cutting area.

Sorry should have specified solid masonry blocks not the hollow ones. Anyway, all of these work arounds involve some risk. Best thing to do would be get taller jackstands.

That being said use common sense, the frame rails on a Model A? are not going to shatter multiple bricks or concrete blocks. When ever I do something like this I have a backup support in case something goes wrong. Crawling under a car isn't a joke. Also whenever I jack something up like this I shake the vehicle as hard as I can to make sure it is extra stable.

I agree with you though I prefer wood when I have extra available.

Fine! I'll buy an angle grinder!

Seriously though thanks I'll have to grab one of these to play with. I could live without the pieces of wire flying at me.

Very useful tool to have. I'm sure you'll use it for something else along the way.
