I'm trying to get a distributor cap, a rotor and a ignition coil for a Honda Accord 95 2.2L non-Vtec, I was quote 30-33$ for the cap, 14-22$ for the rotor and 170$ for the ignition coil! This is wayyyy too much imo. Am turning my head to scrapyards right now.

Did you try Advance Auto? I just looked up a BWD ignition coil for $60.

Worth looking through http://www.rockauto.com/ if any proper-brand bits are in there. Cap: 8-$30, Coil 25-75.

Caveat Emptor:

1) maintenance parts that don't break if packed 30 to a box made for 4.

2) get as many parts from one supplier as possible to save shipping. It's tricky. Watch out for the .99 part with $9 shipping. it happens.

Just move things around suppliers and shipping will work out.

3) Possibly the same generic crap that you wouldn't put on a ratty Escort. Often, though, it's just the standard proper replacement part, ignored for a few decades.

I'd say their site works best for anything older than 10 years.

Your results may vary, but at least with the ignition coil that's worth a gamble.

*Sure, free ad, but all said and done I put my parts back into auto-zone's site. I saved 50%.

The igniter on my 1979 Supra is almost $400.

Am in canada. I got the quote from the 2 cheapest places I know that hold it in stock. My next option is to go directly to the supplier since I got a contact there...but he's really REALLY unreliable. I found a complete distributor in scrapyards for 30$ and at another place 75$.

Ah so this is an immediate thing. You guys don't have auto part chains up there, eh? I would think it's a common part.

I always look there too. But when I need the parts and I need it now, I have to see the parts store in town. I do have a contact directly to the supplier of parts but he's quite unreliable. My option is the scrapyard now. I landed a deal for a complete distributor for 30$ and another one for 75$ with a 3 months warranty.

We got Canadian Tires (really cheap stuff) then Auto value which is a major parts supplier and that's where I got my contact.

Must be because there's no demand for it...still I would cry if I had to pay that much.

They don't make them anymore.

It's cheaper to run an MSD anyway.

yeah, my approach is: 1) can I fix the original 2) Can I get a junkyard original 3) original maker (Mahle, etc. ) parts at local store? 4) Online (local or national)

So much crap these days are parts.

Slightly OT:

How do you ever find a decent Honda? look for the signs of overperformance?

I look at the PCV valve, if it has a LOT of oil in it, I would not buy it. Actually...am not sure of your question.

Sorry more of an observation than a question. I like the cars alright, it's just what some folks do to them seems to make the Honda market a bit of a minefield.

But that may be me falling for the stereotype.

Also, I need to check my PCV valves.

It is a minefield...I turn my back on them and check Acuras instead.

Heh, yeah I'd be getting parts at the (snif) local decent-priced import specialists (when they were open) and there'd always be something some tweaker was breaking incredibly deep inside the motor. Same thing with SubaruWRX. Can't trust the lot.
