How do you hold the steering wheel?

Do you do 10 and 2 or 9 and 3? Do you do hand over hand to turn or twist your arms like a race car driver? I've always wondered what other people do.

Kinja'd!!!

I drive 9 and 3 and twist my arms when possible. It works well with the Trans Ams relatively tight steering ratio and wheel design.

9 and 3 and twist. Regular, track; never lets me down.

When I'm feeling gangster its one at 7 and one on the e-brake. Because ladies love hap-haphazardly performed 180 degree displays of stupidity.

9 and 3, and shuffle that shit.

(fun fact)

I almost failed my driver's test in my Firebird by driving with my hands at 5 and 7.

Guy said I was "milking the cow", and wouldn't be able to swerve well enough if a kid ran out in the street. I wanted to comment that I'd still hit him because of the shitty brakes.

9-3. Twist, shuffle. No set pattern really.

Depends on the car, in the Jetta I drive with one hand on the wheel quite often. When using two hands, it usually ends up around 7 and 5.

In the FR-S it's always 9 and 3. There isn't anywhere to rest my arm even if I wanted to and the steering wheel is very comfortable to hold at 9-3 for long periods of time.

Putting your hands at 5 and 7 is actually better because the lower you hands are, the more lock you can have without crossing your hands.

Yeah I figured that out after the test, but I was so intent on passing (had failed the first time in my mom's Astro van) with my POS Firebird, I didn't think about it till later.

Roughly 9:30 & 2:30. Hand-over-hand on the road, twist on the track.

I've noticed that I like to keep my hands at 9 and 2 - I think it's because I find it keeps the turn signal stalk within closer reach of my left hand.

I started out driving at 10 and 2 because the '05 Matrix I'd learned on had grips there.

Usually between 9 and 12 with one hand, and one hand on/close to the gearlever. When driving fast on twisting roads 9 and 3.

It all depends on the situation for me.

-9 and 3 if I'm driving proper.

-If it's nice out and I've got the window down I put my elbow on the door and just do 9 with my left hand and my right hand on the shifter.

-If I've been sitting in traffic forever I put my left hand at six and my right hand on the shifter.

-If it's a particularly fun road I'll twist my arms for a turn, but mostly it's hand- over-hand.

-If I'm backing out of somewhere or turning around, I'll palm the wheel

I'll admit it, when driving my truck, I'm one of "those guys" that just uses one hand, hanging his left arm from 11:00. I'll shuffle with two hands in situations like parking lots and intersections though, and I NEVER grab the wheel underhanded like this:

10 and 2 for older cars
9 and 3 when an air bag is involved.

Unless you've got a quick steering box, you're going have to shuffle or arm-over-arm it.

9 and 3, and twist, nice and proper.

That is unless I'm hanging my left elbow way out of the goddamn convertible, slouched with my right hand up on top of the wheel (cause ev'ry kid knows that makes you a badass, and I like feeling like a badass, even if I am getting too old to behave like that and drive a thirty year old car).

Sometimes I'll even high-five a muhfugger going the other way.

No, not really. I'm much too boring for that.

9 and 3, twist, nice and proper.

In driver's school I was taught to keep my hands slightly above 9-3 (10-2 I suppose) since some kind of psychological research concluded that you subconsciously look further ahead when doing so. I also regularly get slacky while cruising and tend to put my left hand at 11 or 12 o'clock... It's a bad habit of mine. Whenever I do any kind of spirited driving or the like I switch to 9-3 and twist though.

My wheel* (which for some reason everybody else makes fun of) forces me to use 9 & 3, and you know what? After almost a year with the car I've come to realize that it's more comfortable and easier to control the car than with 10 & 2.

* Not pictured. Mine's black, and I've got the fancy white faced gauges with the optional tach.

I love the handgrips on my 128i's steering wheel, so I'm often at 10 & 2.

But I'll admit, when I'm cruising on the freeway, I usually just hook an index finger in the little slot where the leather stitches together.

10-2, and twisting my arms. Though, with my Jeep, it usually ends up being 9 and noon, with my left elbow on the open window. Not the best for technical driving, but seems about right for cruising.

9-3 when driving in a sporting manner. I love the thumb cutouts on my delicious VW steering wheel. I use both shuffling and hand-over-hand (the correct term for "twist), depending on the situation.

9 and 3 if I am on a narrow road with a good amount of traffic or some other poor road conditions. Otherwise its one arm at 12 and the other whereever (I switch up left/right since its an automatic). Sometimes I will also switch from 12 to 6, depending on how lazy I am.

Having captained said wheel myself for 114k miles, I can say that people make fun of it because it's a little big and rather ugly, but it is very comfortable and useful.

I have a 3-spoke wheel now which is much more attactive, but I miss the option of resting my hand at 6 when I'm stopped.
