The less left lane hogs there are, the better our commutes.

Share. But in VA you can pass on the right. So I give them a little bit of headlight in the left mirror and then decide for them if they don't seem to be getting it.

Also when I am going 70 in a 55 in the left lane. Go around me if you want to go faster. This isn't the autobahn.

I always drive in the left lane when driving long distances on the highway (which I do alot). I used to regularly drive every weekend 300 km from Barrie, ON to London, ON. I would go at a steady 130-140 km/h. I would move over if someone came up behind me faster, or if there was an emergency vehicle coming. Though I don't see the problem with it.

"the better our commutes."

Lol, my commute is a huge parking lot, but I fully support getting people to respect the left lane rule during my weekend travels and on road trips.

Driving on the left would make it easier for vehicles to enter the freeway.

In some states in the US such as they pull people over for staying left, even if there is no traffic around. But yeah, I don't mind if you do this, since we're not on the German Autobahn with a Porsche coming behind you at like 260 km/h. As long as you move over when someone's behind, that's what really matters.

It doesn't matter if you're going the speed limit. You may feel like you're doing the right thing by slowing a speeder down, or you may feel it's your RIGHT to drive in any lane you 'darn well please.'

You're not. It's not.
And you ARE breaking the law... in most states.

I wish it was that simple here in Connecticut, the Land of the Left-Hand Exit. On my commute I have to take a left-lane exit. It is comical to watch out of state drivers trip all over themselves to get over to the left lane only to have to move over two lanes to the right when the road splits. You know, because the two miles of signs warning you of the split weren't enough. I'll eventually have a dashcam to record the lunacy.

And as not to into a pissing contest with other posters, I'll just write here that it doesn't matter how fast you are going, if you are hanging in the left lane you are wrong.

Yeah only when people are merging, I tend to agree. But this was quoted by the author of a book who researched the German Autobahn and US interstate for 12 years. I'm not quite sure why he said that. Maybe people tend to drive slower when they are at the right, so drivers don't have to speed up as much to merge (less speed variance), making it easier in their eyes.

THIS

How does a million cars in the right lane make it easier to merge into said lane? Maybe it's so the cars can merge into the left and make space for you, but that would require attentive courteous drivers...

I honestly think that its stupid to pull people over in the left lane. What happens if the two right lanes are congested with traffic but the left lane is open because "your not allowed to drive there" ? It should be the faster lane like the autobahn ( not that i am suggesting it should be unrestriced, though that would be cool). I have seen alot of highways where the left lane is the HOV lane, why not just make it a lane with a higher speed limit?

...because you abide by every known law in your state.

So many pointless things are illegal now. If you avoid the left lane because of the fact it's illegal and not because you think you are making traffic safer by staying in the right lane then you should live a little.

That fact that its illegal might be enough to motivate people who aren't aware that its safer and courteous, to move over.

If you think it would be a better idea to place signs up explaining the benefits of staying right, or maybe an educational campaign to teach high schoolers the dangers of left lane lounging, or maybe hand out fliers door to door, then I'd suggest you contact your congressman or your local community activist group to get the word out. Otherwise, maybe we can just tell everyone its illegal, so GTFO.

You ARE allowed to drive in the left lane, as long as you are faster than cars on the right. The exception is heavy traffic or a traffic jam in which all lanes are utilized and law provides an exception (in most cases as well as on the Autobahn). Just to clarify, this is the exact same law as on the German Autobahn. They pioneered this idea, in a way, that's how it actually accommodates high speeds. It's also illegal to pass on the right over there, with a hefty fine if you do.

Or.. people allow safe gaps that will allow the merging traffic in.

Remember that this applies to open roads, freeways, and highways. City traffic this doesn't apply.

Okay, 55mph zones probably experience heavy traffic, but if you're in a 65mph+ roadway doing 15 over the limit in the left lane and I pull up on you going 25+ over the limit, you better get out of the fuckin' way.

As a motorcycle rider, the left lane is the safest place to be on the freeway. You have half the chance of an inattentive driver side swiping you, and you typically have an escape path for those occurrences when it does happen. Sorry, speeders/aggressive drivers.
