A pirate captain has brought on a new first mate. The very first day, the captain tells his new hire, "When we engage another ship in battle, never forget to give me my red shirt. If I get hit, the rest of the men won't know and will continue fighting." The first mate takes note, and they continue on with the rest of their day.
A few days later, the first mate wakes the captain from his slumber and exclaims, "Captain, sir...we're under attack!"
"Under attack!?" the captain says while waking up. "How many ships? 2? 3?"
"Not quite," the first mate replied. "More like 50. Should I fetch you your red shirt?"
"Forget the red shirt!" The captain replies. "Fetch me my brown pants!"
