I think you need to be an approved author or something to have them not be greyed out.

Editors. Oppo is our playground, pretty much anyone gets to post here. Jalopnik and other Front Page (FP) blogs make you earn author status with good posts.

You don't seem grey here on Oppo :) As for on the Jalop main page, why not just ask Raph or Travis? I got fed up beeing grey on Jalop Mainpage, so I just asked Travis if he could do something about that, and he did, if that was because I tend to write a lot and answer obscure questions IDK.. but still... worth a shot eh?

There's an algorithm at work on the Jalopnik page (or so they explained to us). I don't know exactly how it works but if you are a regular, and write worthwile comments, it will recognise you at some point and put you in the black.
