I just moved into a new place. The lake and the dock make the little bit of extra cost worth it.
When I pulled into the driveway today, I parked and realized that I couldn't see the other cars because all of my roommates have trucks. One them even just bought a new F-150 with the V8 Triton motor and pretty hefty lift kit. Even my little bro has the Ranger Edge on some fat tires (he refers to it as the F-50 because it sits higher than most full size trucks).
I guess my point here is that I need a vehicle that will match this place, and I don't think I'll come up with anything solid and interesting enough for me to go buy one (my current AWD/4WD want list reads: Isuzu Vehicross, which I don't think will go over well.) So if I have $5k to spend on an interesting a quirky but capable truck, what should I get?

5 grand? How creative do you want to be? My suggestion would be a Suzuki Samurai. Buy the Sammy, then buy a set of Toyota axles, front and rear, then buy a 1.9 VW diesel engine conversion kit and put some 33s under it and call it good.
You'll get better fuel economy than your roomates, plus you'll have a rig that'll go anywhere.

I actually like this idea a lot. It keeps my car different from theirs so it doesn't look like I'm caving to peer pressure and I still get something weird, capable, and slightly German.

You can also get a waste oil kit and run it in a separate tank from regular diesel. Your slightly German Samurai will smell like french fries. :D

I saw one on the side of the road for 4k that was in pretty great condition. My wallet just can't handle the gas. I am looking at trading in my Jetta for a Fiesta ST so I may be on the dark side sooner than I thought.

I hear the Fiesta ST is a blast.
I personally love anything with a Ford Small Block in it these days. (Montego is a 302 V8)
Those trucks are a blast and if u used it as a daily driver as opposed to a brand new fiesta ST a 4000 purchase price might balance out gas savings wise.
