Suck it optional Blind Spot Monitors.

I have had my side mirrors set like this for the past ~10 years after hearing about the theory on Car Talk. Luckily, they have a great write up on their website along with a handy PDF file too:

Avoiding The Blind Spot

Good info. But I still rely on a couple of these, mounted on the lower inside corner of each mirror.

Yes! This! Set so you the angle of view runs down the rear quarter panel. I set mine up the same way, works wonders for increasing visibility behind you.

Another tip, if you have them set up this way (and you have power mirrors) you can adjust the curbside mirror straight down when you are parallel parking to see your rear wheel and the curb. Never again will you curb a wheel. I believe some more higher end cars do this automatically when you put the car in reverse.

I find that when I do this, I can never figure out what the fuck my wing mirrors are looking at. I barely use my mirrors anyway, my car has very good visibility so I just shoulder check everywhere.

I still shoulder check to this day too. Just to make sure the mirror is not being a dick and hiding something from me.

When sitting in the passenger seat and you can see yourself in the side mirror, it's set too far inward. Why do you need three mirrors to show you whats directly behind you?

I set mine kinda like this. I like a little bit of overlap though, it makes it easier to orient myself with the angle of the left mirror. And I don't actually have a right mirror, so i usually set my rearview a bit to the right, and fill in the gap with my left mirror.

A pet peeve though: when people set their side mirrors so half the mirror is looking at the side of the car. Why would you ever need to see the side of your car???

It did take me about a week to tweak the mirrors to get the transitions correct. Then a few months later some a-hole at the dealership adjusted them and messed them up. I almost shanked him.

I put Euro spec aspherical mirrors on both sides of my VWs. No more blind spots and I'm smart enough to realize that objects in mirror are in fact closer than they appear without having that written on the glass.

Hmm I always thought you should just barely be able to see your car in the side mirrors.

my car has the worst blind spots ever.
