I'm thinking of going with one of these AAA kits and adding to it from there, or I could buy everything separately. It all depends on what's more economical. It'll still serve as a good base, though.

The one pictured includes:

The AAA 70 Piece Explorer Road Assistance Kit is an economical choice that gives you an expanded set of tools so you can take on the open road. It comes with the following items: 1 AAA double-sided carrying bag, 1 AAA emergency care guide, 1 AAA membership brochure, 1 heavy duty booster cable (8-gauge, 10-foot length), 1 hand-charged dual LED flashlight, 1 pair of dimpled work gloves, 1 emergency poncho, 1 emergency whistle, 1 flat head screwdriver, 1 Phillips head screwdriver, 1 roll of duct tape, 1 utility knife, 1 bungee cord, 2 shop cloths, 10 cable ties, and a 45 piece first-aid kit.

What are some essentials that you keep in your car in the event of an emergency or breakdown? In other words, what would you add to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?

I would get your own kit, the stuff in those kits is a little flimsy. make sure to bring water, some food and a deck of cards.

Yeah, it's looking like I'm better off doing that. I can get a first-aid kit and get the rest separately.

Some few items to consider: First-aid kit, Mouthwash, Hand cream or sun block, Small hand-tools of your choice, Extra fuses to fit your vehicle, Decent plastic flashlight w/batteries, Hank of sturdy rope, List of emergency contacts, Full roll of duct tape, Full roll of quarters, $25.00 in five-dollar bills, Several liters of water (plastic bottles), Super-duty battery jumper cables, and a cheap nylon backpack to hold all your gear.

Living in the west, where things can get pretty isolated, I carry warm clothing (insulated overalls, hat, gloves, boots), something to make a fire with, a chain or good strap, water, some food that will keep for a while (small canned ham e.g), flashlight with extra batteries, basic tools, mylar "space blanket", and the usual jumper cables etc. Only had to use it once, but at 10,000 feet elevation, was glad I had the stuff.

In addition to tools (16 piece socket set either SAE or METRIC depending on make) a good light,I recommend one of these , You get a a decent spot light and a really nice broad engine light that's easy to hang or to mount. I would also make sure to have a sleeping bag or emergency bivy in cold climates (I just added this ) but you can get cheaper space blanket. I also think a decent pair of working gloves and some rope and a knife are good bet too. I have no room or weight constraints in my truck so I take as much as I think i might need.

Also consider: A quart of oil, a container of brake fluid, a container of power steering fluid, an ATM machine, a floor jack, a small APU plus fuel, spare headlight bulbs, spare brake-light bulbs, glove-box expansion tool, two rolled-up blankets, a large bottle of blinker fluid, as well as a full box of powdered gasoline.

I recommend a roll around floor jack, good quality lug wrench, and a fire extinguisher in addition to the contents of that kit.

Hand-charge flashlights are garbage. Get a regular one and just remember to change the batteries every so often. Two adjustable wrenches, needle-nose pliers, and dykes are also a good idea (or just a full toolbox). Spare brake and headlight bulbs. A Leatherman or Swiss. Duct tape. Zip Ties. 550 cord. A little cigarette lighter powered air compressor. Fire extinguisher. And definitely a cellphone charger.

That's what I roll with in my trucks. In the little cars I pretty much just have a Leatherman, a flashlight, and a AAA card.

Forget about being economical, the items in the kit are most likely of poor Chinese made quality and will let you down when you really need it. Go get yourself a high quality (#4 gauge) 12ft long jumper cable set, you will really appreciate having the extra long length. Hand crank flashlights made in China are not a good choice, get a good flashlight with spare batteries. A fire extinguisher is a must. A high quality trauma/first aid kit with the items needed to stop major bleeding would be beneficial. A couple cans of Fix-A-Flat stored in the trunk can help you get home without changing a tire on the side of a busy, dangerous highway.
