It's a Holley 570 aluminum Street Avenger to go on top of my edelbrock performer 289 intake. The engines not that hot, just a stock 289 bored .04 over with intake, full length headers, 2 1/2 inch out with an H pipe. I might port my stock heads, but that will come after I get my t-5 in, that's priority from here on out. I also have to install the replacement rear leafs I've got sitting in the garage.

Great! What cam are you going with?

Well the engine has a few thousand miles on it since it was rebuilt in the late 90's, It's what I'm assuming is a stock flat tappet. I don't think I'm dropin' in a cam just yet, I was gonna wait this engine out. Not do any real engine mods besides DIY stuff and save up so when I do want new, I can go roller cam with electronic ignition and EFI, basically swapping in a 93 gt motor but that's years down the road. As far as fun goes, shes BEGGING to be a manual again.

I'm the devil when it comes to talking my buddies into modding. If you've got the intake off, you're halfway through with a cam swap. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-k300… $139 for cam and lifters...barely noticable lope and completely streetable even with a stock converter.....

Damn you! I'll bookmark this for sure. I wouldn't need to change rockers/springs/pushrods right? I know a fair amount about engines as far as intakes/heads/headers and exhaust goes, but I don't know much about all the little parts in between.

yeah, this cam is a drop in. Don't make it so expensive that you won't get it done. That being said, you said you might port the heads? Have you done this work before? I enjoy it myself even though I'm a 4 out of 10 on the scale of head porters I know.

If the heads are off, I'm a big proponent of valve springs as being the biggest bang for your buck on a near stock engine. Actually better to have good springs on a stock head than bad springs on a ported head. Not a lot more peak power, but often extends that peak another 1000rpm+. That's means it doesn't drop too far in the next gear...better average power to get you down the track faster. Doesn't have to be a mondo springs...just something between 110lbs and 130lbs of seat pressure for a hydraulic flat tappet...that's well up from the 60-80 you probably have now. A little bowl work, fresh valve job, throw the heads back on!

The heads aren't off at the moment. I've been house sitting for the past week so I haven't been able to do anything just yet. The engine is actually all together at the moment, I've just had a bad series of leaks from the thermostat housing that's delaying me from getting to do the fun stuff. Can't drive it if there's no coolant. Once I get that sorted it, shes out for the winter, although that might be good, gives me time to port the heads.

So with some new valve springs, say, #120, what do you think would be the rev limit? I would be scared of taking out my valves/heads anything above like 6.2k. Would new rockers/pushrods be worth the upgrade if I do decide to go all in with the cam and springs?

Now you're getting me excited for spring.

Strictly speaking you wouldn't need new rockers and pushrods but the new lift will wear a new area in the rocker so it would be good to get cheap replacements at least. New thick wall pushrods with swedged ends would be nice if welded on ball ones currently. 120lbs would be fine but use some special break in oil. As for rpm, if you are using an inexpensive tach, theres a good chance you arent turning 6200 now. Ive seen this a lot over the years from chassis dynoing quite a bit. Ive not seen a 289 or 302 spit out a rod at less than 7k, so I'd feel comfortable enough with this smaller cam as it will mostly pick up power between 3500-6500. Chassis dyno is always a good thing to verify everything is happy. Even if you didnt upgrade a lot of stuff like springs rockers pushrods and kept the rom limit where it is, you woulf pick up quite a bit. Just be careful with measuring and inspection and you should be fine.

Thanks man! This is my first classic and I'm learning as I go, so I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions in time. Cheers.
