I don't see the point either, but they wouldn't catch mud and water while in a race.

They are actually a clever aerodynamic trick. they flow additional air over the rear bumper and bottom of the spoiler which simultaneously reduces drag and increases downforce. they also allow the use of less-restrictive mufflers while still meeting track-side noise limits. when your v6 spins over 10000 rpm you do what you can to keep air flowing into and out of it.
