175 points. Granted, there are some points of contention. At worst it ends up in the E39 in your pocket category (145 points), and if all points of contention are allowed, it ends up in Bitchin' Camino territory (205 points)

Examples: BMW doesn't build cupholders, because my Bubba mug doesn't fit in them. And it's not a grotesquely oversized one either.

However, they all fit the official Mini ashtray part.

100 points for mixed origin. The engine is effectively French (by Peugeot) albeit with a BMW Valvetronic head, some of the switchgear is straight German BMW, and the rest is British. The window sticker says 1/5th of the parts are from the UK.

Also viva la shooting break. Or station wagon. Either one gets points.

Conclusion: The Mini Clubman S might just be one of the most Jalop brand new cars one could buy on a reasonable budget today.

It's definitely one of the weirdest.

If your car has any French heritage whatsoever, it's pretty easy to score high. For example, my 1.1 litre Peugeot 106 3-door hits E39 territory, with only one point of contention. If I go the other way on the toss-up, it's - appropriately enough I suppose, though it is a petrol hatchback - in the 'turbo-diesel Peugeot wagon' band.

(It's the one in the middle.)

(The either/or is in the power category. If I go by what it had when it rolled off the production line in 2000 - 59 horsepower - I get five points. If I go by what I'm fairly sure it has now, almost 14 years later - mid forties - I get 25, for being 'very brave'. Of course, that 45 or so horsepower is plenty for a 700-ish kilogram hatchback to feel reasonably comfortable at motorway speeds - 70-80 MPH - and when overtaking on backroads... But don't tell the JalopMeter that.)

There are a few points where the JalopMeter could stand a little calibration. The Jezza category for one, and the fact that a Panhard Dyna Z doesn't register as a Jalop car moreso than the standard picks, for another.

It also has a certain idea that it lives in the US. Which is why you get so many extra points for a French car, and need 1000HP, and somehow has a Chrysler Slant-6 in it.
