Sub-$5000 winter beater edition. As we all know, arriving at your destination safely and in a timely manner is passι. Gathered together there here are the "best" turds, cheap thrills, and other unwise decisions I found on New England's craigslists.
$3000 - 1983 AMC Eagle SX4
Oh yes. 4-speed and the 4.2 straight-6 to boot! Plus, relatively low mileage for its age at 110k, and the owner appears to have poured in a serious amount of his own cash/labor sorting out the top end, carb, clutch, trans, and brakes. Running, but still "needs some finishing touches" according to the seller.

$2500 5-speed 1987 Saab 900 with '88 turbo lump
For your quirky Swedish design fetish. 132k on the chassis, a well-preserved interior, and pictures of the build. Do want. Can't have because college student "never inherit someone else's project" etc, I know but it's a 2k 900 turbo!

$4400 1985 300CD
Even if you only have a few grand to spend, the w123 market is your oyster. Diesels tend to be slightly pricier as they run forever if properly maintained. I'll take this '85 coupe.

$1000 1963 3-on-the-tree Wagoneer
Into projects? With a little negotiation this jalopy could be yours for mere hundreds of dollars. That's dirt cheap for an interesting ride of this vintage, let alone one which "RUN'S AND DRIVE'S." Though you'll have to smack the seller in the mouth twice when you get there, once for each verb apostrophe

$2000 3-pedal 1970 Toyota Corona Survivor
No mention of mileage, but it looks to be in far better shape than it has any right to be a steal! And these are F/R too

$2800 1985 El Camino, 90k & service records
As I'm sure you've already guessed given the price, yes, it's a glorious V6 auto. BUT at this point the Camino was so hideous it's funny. Also practicality! And, at the very least, it can definitely be said that there's nothing 'beige' about it.

$1500 1986 Toyota MR2
190k, but we're talking about a Toyota I4 here, not a jag v12. Rebuilt transmission and a new clutch. The interior looks clean too, but you'll have to ditch that nasty body kit if you don't want a rice ticket.

$1500 1978 Lincoln Conti Town Car, 49k original miles & a '13 inspection sticker
If this sort of thing floats your boat, you have a dirt-cheap cruiser on your hands. Double down on air suspension and a DIY paintjob, then hit the boulevards. Just don't expect fuel economy, it's not one of the 7.5 liter V8's strong points. Laughably, power isn't either - you'll be measuring gas mileage in single digits and pushing ~200 horses. Oil crises are a hell of a drug.

$4000 1961 Bel Air sedan
Not a coupe, but still infinitely more interesting to run/glance at through the restaurant window than a modern econobox. The interior seems to have held up well to boot, and you can go spelunking in the trunk.

I had an AMC Eagle with a V8 and 2WD it was an awesome car! I would drift on the back roads going up to Prince George BC..I was coming around a big left hander full opposite lock on gravel right foot planted...when some guy on the other side of the road appears in a Toyota truck doing the exact same thing....we passed each other...going sideways at about 60 mph...it was awesome...neither of us lifted..just kept drifting ...Gravel 4 lane roads...are Hooning gold and my little AMC was shit brown...and all awesome...loved that car...so much engine...

I want that MR2.
Also, this is a very New England assortment of cheap cars.
