This looks ridiculously clean and well maintained, and with only 116,00 miles, it's just broken in.
1987 Jeep Commanche 4x4 4.0L on ebay
Sure, the flat black spray can paint job isn't ideal (seller admits he was going to eventually have it painted but didn't) but otherwise this looks remarkably clean and with low mileage. 4.0L six, 5 speed, 4x4 model. Nice little 3" lift too, which makes it look perfect and more modern IMO.
Located somewhere in NY, Long Island I think?

Well, it isn't the Comanche Eliminator, so you wouldn't look massively racist...

The transmission is shit, but it will last. Good deal.

Ah, is that the early Peugeot one? The better Aisin one should just drop in I imagine, if the original craps out.

Those things just keep going and going... Hopefully, the bidding won't go much higher.

The only real issue with the swap is the BA10/5 has a 21-spline output shaft and the AX15 has a 23-spline shaft, so if you get a junkyard transmission you might as well get the NP231 transfer case with it. If it's an '87 it probably has the NP207 transfer case which sucks, so just swap everything. You'll need the AX15, NP231, rear driveshaft, clutch kit with bearing, AX15 crossmember mount, shifter, and bellhousing. I think a junkyard swap might be the easiest way to go actually - just grab a 5spd from a 1990 or newer Cherokee with 4WD.

A 80s jeep on Long Island with no rust? I'm impressed.

An '87 has the "Renix" engine ECU, right? Those can be a little quirky IIRC.
My buddy had a late 80's XJ with the Peugeot transmission. 2nd gear didn't work, so he just revved the balls off of it in 1st and then lugged it a bit in 3rd.

Man, 2nd gear was the only good gear in that transmission haha. I had my Renix 4.0L for over 100,000 before I wrecked it (291,000 on the odometer) and the only issue I ever had was a TPS. The biggest worry would be vacuum leaks and because it was made for 3 years parts might be scarce. Upgrades are tough, too. I eventually had a Pacesetter header and Borla exhaust, no cat (was stolen haha), a bored out TB and bigger injectors. The Renix engine is a good engine and responds well to changes since it's pre-OBD but for any real power you'd want to stroke it.
