It's a slow day at work today so I came up with this challenge:

Ask me some car related question or give me a topic to discuss. It can be on any topic. I will choose 1 of the topics at 10am. I will then do research if necessary and write a short article based on that topic.

I am not a writer so I don't expect a magical unicorn of enlightenment when my response is posted but it should be a fun way to kill the time.

Here's an example of what I am envisioning in the comments:

a) What's your thoughts on the Hyundai Genesis?

b) Whats the next step for SRT to succeed?

etc.

That's a good one. Along the same lines, should Hyundai/Kia develop a luxury nameplate for the US (ala Lexus/Infiniti) in order to be successful with cars like the K900, Genesis, etc.?

Not to write his article for him, but the K900 feels like it's a different badge away from success. I don't think people will spend $60K for a Kia. Even if it's better than a Lexus, BMW, MB, etc., most higher end sedans are purchased for the image, and Kia just doesn't have it, nor does Hyundai. Call it "Genesis" maybe and let Hyundai and Kia feed higher caliber cars into it.

I have a feeling when I get back on that network that all images wild be dead on Jaloppo. The other sites aren't using the cloudinary URL for images (yet).

The URL is a mouthful of redirect. The bold text is added to the original URL, and that's what's being filtered.

I figured I would chime in for a short answer. I think you are both correct.

To be honest, I don't think the K900 will sell in any significant numbers but I also don't believe Kia expects it to. Neither the Genesis or Equus have been runaway sales successes, though I am seeing more of them than I expected to. I think the K900 is a way for Hyundai to spread their development costs while bolstering their new-found upscale image.

I like the idea of a second, err actually third brand dedicated to luxury vehicles because that will eliminate the economy car heritage they were born from. However, looking at Lexus as the example, they have been around for 20 years (more now?) and many can still only consider them an "also-ran" at least in some categories. This would also require significant time and investment on the part of hyundai/kia. Sadly, as popular as they are getting, I don't think they have deep enough pockets or the market share to do it. If they did, I am afraid that their other products will suffer right as they are beginning to hit their stride. I would much rather see quality follow-ups to their current line-ups. IF the Lincoln LS has taught us anything, it is that creating a quality car, while hard, is doable— but you need to follow it up to remain competitive.
